Updated PIAA Class AAA Super 16 (4-20-15)

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

One month into a precipitation-filled spring, we are releasing our first in-season update to the PIAA Class AAA Super 16 (i.e. the teams we believe are best positioned to reach the state tournament, if district tournaments started today). A couple of notes:

1. X-Y under "Berth" = [District]-[Bid]. For example, 3-2 is the runner-up from District III.
2. If multiple districts are listed on one line, those districts will form a sub-regional to determine that bid.

2015 PIAA Class AAA Super 16
Berth School Record Notes
1-1 Holy Ghost Prep
9-0 The Firebirds have, and will continue to, pound overmatched competition in the Bicentennial Athletic League. That being said, this team can pitch with anyone, as shutouts of Archbishop Wood & Council Rock North attest.
3-4 West Perry
9-1 Gonna take awhile to sort out the Mid-Penn Capital (see berths 3-2 & 3-3 below). Those three talent-rich teams have all gone 1-1 vs each other so far. This Mustangs staff hasn't allowed more than 3 runs in a game.

2-1 North Pocono
6-1 Opened the season with impressive wins over Abington Heights & Scranton Prep, and have continued to roll since then. Litmus test this week against a couple of solid 4A schools and a rematch with Abington Heights.
4-1 Jersey Shore Area
2-1-1 Four games, with the only loss being by one run, isn't enough for us to amend our preseason evaluation just yet.

11-1 Pottsville Area 8-2 The Crimson Tide ascend to this spot following a seven game win streak that includes victories over the other top district contenders: 3-2 vs Tamaqua Area & 9-2 vs Blue Mountain.
3-2 East Pennsboro
7-1 As mentioned, we're essentially throwing three Mid-Penn Capital teams into a hat at this point. Solid, non-league wins against Greencastle-Antrim & Bishop McDevitt give them the nod here, for now.

12-1 Archbishop Wood 7-2 The Vikings are the only undefeated team in Philadelphia Catholic League play and recorded a convincing 6-0 win over other top PCL contender Neumann-Goretti.
3-3 Northern York
10-1 A young Polar Bears pitching staff, perhaps coming into its own a year earlier than expected, has allowed three runs or less in ten contests.

3-1 West York Area
9-0 Despite significant losses to graduation, this program just continues to grind out victories. Allowed three runs or less in six of nine games.
12-2 Franklin Towne Charter 6-1 FTC has logged some solid wins, including over Philadelphia Public League 4A contenders Central & Frankford, as well as 4A Father Judge out of the Philadelphia Catholic League.

5-1/
6-1
Somerset Area 7-2 Nothing earth-shattering here. Eagles are still the top dog in this sub-region until proven otherwise.
7-2 West Mifflin Area
8-2 Poised to run away with Section 4, the Titans are already two games up in the loss column and haven't dropped a game to an in-state foe yet.

7-1 West Allegheny 7-3 Pitching staff has allowed three runs or less in eight games. All three losses to solid clubs by one run, two of which came in the third game of a 3-games-in-3-days stretch (which won't happen in the WPIAL playoffs).
8-1/
9-1
Punxsutawney Area 8-0 Have outscored opponents 89-25. Would take a major upset to knock the Chucks out of this state bid, which has been their birthright for a decade.

10-1 Cathedral Prep 7-0 The Ramblers pitching staff is sporting a 1.52 ERA and better than 4:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, while the offense is hitting .328 and has a 48:27 [BB+HBP]-to-strikeout ratio.
7-3 Montour 7-4 A half-game back in Section 3, the Spartans had a 6-1 lead against West Allegheny last week before falling 7-6.
