Roundup of WPIAL First Round Action

The WPIAL playoffs are loaded with quality baseball teams on a yearly basis and highly ranked teams exit the tournament early every year. With 1st round action played yesterday the 2013 rendition of the tournament did not produce a high number of alarming upsets, but a few lower seeds managed to make some noise in advancing to quarterfinal action that will take place on Wednesday.

Following is a look at the results from yesterday by class along with the sites and times for quarterfinal games to be played on Wednesday:

AAAA

ManuppelliThe 4A 1st Round played out according to the bracket with #7 seed Shaler being the only team not to advance among the top eight seeds. #10 seed Plum pulled off a mild upset in defeating Shaler 2-1 behind RHP Zack Manuppelli. The senior tossed a complete game two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and the lone run he allowed was unearned.

Nick RiottoThe upset bug bit Hampton, ranked No. 6 in the PBR 3A state poll as the Talbots fell 4-3 to #14 seed Trinity to see their season end at 17-3. Penn State recruit Nick Riotto struck out eight in a complete game effort for Trinity, allowing just one earned run.

Updated Bracket

The 2A bracket saw the largest share of upsets in round one as the #3, #5 and #7 seeds all fell.

RitchieRiverside entered ranked No. 9 in the PBR 2A state rankings. The two-time defending state champions lost 9-2 to #14 seed Shady Side ending their run of success in the state tournament.

#5 seed New Brighton lost a 12-11 slugfest to #12 seed Greensburg Central Catholic and #7 seed Washington was shutout 1-0 by #11 seed Laurel. RHP Brandon Ritchie, a George Washington recruit, tossed a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts to help the Spartans advance.

The 1A bracket played out close to the script with the top six seeds advancing. Possibly the most alarming loss was #8 seed Vincentian getting manhandled 16-1 by #9 seed Bishop Canevin.
