Western PA College Prospect Showcase Analysis: Class of 2018

The summer schedule of PBR events in Pennsylvania concluded this past week with the 2016 Western PA College Prospect Showcase on August 18. Nearly 50 prospects from four states gathered to showcase their abilities at the Iron Horse Sports Complex in Windber, PA. Today we continue our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at the prospects that participated from the Class of 2018.

TOP PROSPECTS

Nicholas MaueNicholas Maue, SS/OF/RHP, Moon Area HS
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a leg lift stride. Displayed a solid feel for the barrel with above average barrel whip (bat exit velocity of 86 mph). Ran a 7.13 60-yard dash and displayed solid carry on throws of 84 mph from the outfield. Primary infielder did not work out defensively at shortstop on this day. Righty sat 78-81 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Works solely from the stretch and flashed a 11/5 breaking 68 mph curveball with tight rotation as his secondary pitch.

Emmett McCauleyEmmett McCauley, C, Stroudsburg HS
Solidly built 5-foot-10, 185-pound backstop flashed a clean transition and quick release with 70 mph arm strength out of the crouch (2.06-2.15 pop times). Right handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a short lift-and-replace stride. Showcased some length to his swing with a bat exit velocity of 83 mph. Stays behind baseball well and displays strength in his lower half with the ability to get to full extension with regularity. Showcased some present pull-side power with a solid feel for the barrel.

REMAINING PROSPECTS (IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER)

Riley Carroll, OF/RHP, Blue Mountain HS
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a short stride. Displayed a flat barrel path with some length to his swing and a bat exit velocity of 80 mph. Showcased capable defensive actions in the outfield (80 mph arm strength) and at first base while also throwing a bullpen session. Righty sat 76-79 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with sound, repeatable mechanics. Also commanded a 69 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation, a 74 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed and a splitter that sat 71-74.

Nathan Dankis, RHP, Montour HS
6-foot-1, 155-pound right-hander sat 77-78 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a long-arm throwing motion. Displayed a quick arm and some quirkiness to his delivery that adds deception. Also showcased a 72 mph changeup with some sink thrown at near fastball arm speed and a 71 mph curveball with 11/5 shape to compliment his fastball.

Josh Ferrar, OF/1B, Hempfield Area HS
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance with a high-hands load and initiates his swing with a short stride. A short, flat barrel path and a solid feel for the barrel results in a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. Ferrar ran a 7.21 60-yard dash and displayed accurate 74 mph arm strength from the outfield.

Connor Hanafin, 3B, Sayre Area HS
5-foot-9, 210-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance with a high-hands load and initiates his swing with a short, lift-and-replace stride. Displayed some lift to his swing with a feel for the barrel and a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. Showed active feet and capable defensive actions at the hot corner with accurate 72 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Jake Rathway, 2B/OF, Belle Vernon Area HS
5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance with a high-hands load. Initiates his swing with a pronounced leg-lift stride. On this date struggled to get foot down on time leading to difficulties barreling the baseball (68 mph bat exit velocity. Displayed active feet while consistently playing through the baseball during his infield workout. Showed the ability to make throws from multiple arm slots and accurate 70 mph arm strength. Overall game will benefit from continued physical maturity and strength gains.

Kolby Saurs, OF, Northern York HS
5-foot-9, 140-pound right-handed hitter ran a 7.45 60-yard dash and registered a bat exit velocity of 80 mph. Starts his swing from a slightly open stance and incorporates a short stride to initiate his lower half. Barreled the baseball consistently during batting practice round with a line drive approach. Displayed capable defensive actions with accurate 79 mph arm strength.

Zach Zeis, OF/RHP, Pine-Richland HS
5-foot-7, 140-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance, utilizing a leg-lift stride to initiate his swing. Registered a 76 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.59 60-yard dash. Displayed the ability to play through the baseball defensively with accurate 76 mph arm strength from his primary outfield position. Righty sat 71-74 from a 3/4 arm slot on the mound with some hip-coil to his delivery. Also showcased a 62-64 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation.
