By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

The 2015 Western PA College Prospect Showcase took place on July 1 on the campus of Seton Hill University. Our rundown of the participants wraps up today with the 22 right-handed pitchers in attendance.

2016 Right-handed pitchers

Colt Fairbanks, 3B/RHP, Conneaut Area, Class of 2016

5-foot-11, 170-pound primary third baseman. Righty sat 73-74 while topping at 76 mph from a high 3/4 slot with an overhead rocker delivery. 61 mph curveball showed tight 11/5 rotation and changeup was flat at 67 mph.

Jeremiah Frazier, RHP, Knoch, Class of 2016

5-foot-9, 145-pound right-handed pitcher sat 81-83 from a 3/4 arm slot with some late cut action. Tendency to slow arm action when throwing 65 mph curveball with 10/4 rotation. 66 mph changeup was thrown at near fastball arm speed and showed some arm side run.

Bryce Funa, RHP, Somerset, Class of 2016

6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed pitcher sat 79-81 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with some hip coil to his delivery. 67 mph curveball showed 11/5 rotation. 71 mph changeup was fairly straight but thrown at same arm speed as fastball. Funa showed a balanced, athletic delivery and a projectable frame that indicates additional velocity gains are likely.

Scott Hughes, RHP, Central Valley, Class of 2016

6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed pitcher sat 82-84 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm side run and late sink to his fastball. 73 mph curveball showed good depth with consistent 12/6 rotation. Displayed command of an 80 mph changeup that lacked movement. Projectable frame and the ability to throw downhill make Hughes an interesting follow in this class.

Nick Kempa, RHP/1B, Vincentian Academy, Class of 2016

6-foot-1, 205-pound primary pitcher. Righty sat 78-80 from a 3/4 arm slot with some late arm side run. 10/4 breaking curveball varies in shape depending on his arm speed with velocity ranging from 65-68 mph. Kempa's changeup is a quality offering thrown at fastball arm speed with arm side run at 72 mph. Kempa's frame, above average balance throughout his delivery and arm speed indicate a velocity spike could yet occur for the uncommitted senior.

Ben Ramey, RHP/3B, Franklin Regional, Class of 2016

6-foot-3, 240-pound primary pitcher is built like an NFL tight end. Ramey sat 79-81 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with good balance to his delivery. Ramey's 68 mph curveball showed tight 11/5 rotation and late bite. Additional work on a slower arm speed will be needed to improve upon his current 66 mph changeup that lacks much movement.

Kyle Stack, RHP, Greensburg Central Catholic, Class of 2016

6-foot, 170-pound right-handed pitcher sat 78-80 from a 3/4 arm slot with a loose, easy delivery. Ball tends to jump out of his hand and it appears the uncommitted senior has more yet in the tank. Curveball showed short, 10/3 cut action at 66 mph. Stack's 72 mph changeup shows some late sink and is thrown at near fastball arm speed. Sound, repeatable mechanics and loose arm action should lead to additional velocity moving forward.

Josh Stegmaier, RHP/3B, Morgantown (WV), Class of 2016

5-foot-11, 185-pound primary pitcher. Righty sat 78-80 while topping at 84 mph from a high 3/4 arm slot. Stegmaier also flashed a 67 mph curveball with 10/4 rotation and a slider that sat 70-71. Pounded strike zone and displayed loose arm that should lead to velocity gains moving forward.

Tre' Thomas, RHP/3B, Ambridge, Class of 2016

6-foot, 175-pound primary pitcher. Righty sat 82-83 while touching 85. Fastball is fairly straight but showed late life. Displayed a 66 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation with a tendency to short arm the pitch. 75 mph changeup was thrown at near fastball arm speed and displayed some two-seam cut action. Good tempo and balance to delivery. Thomas has shown significant velocity gains over past nine months and appears to still be on an upward trajectory.

2017 right-handed pitchers

Mason Akers, RHP/MIF, Everett Area, Class of 2017

5-foot-9, 135-pound primary pitcher. Righty sat 69-60 from a 3/4 arm slot with a long arm delivery. Displayed a 64mph curveball that lacked distinct shape due to an inability to get on top of the pitch on this day. Changeup is currently Akers best pitch, thrown at 65 mph with some arm side run at near fastball arm speed.

Jared Kollar, SS/RHP, Greater Latrobe, Class of 2017

5-foot-11, 180-pound primary infielder. Righty sat 82-83 while topping at 86 mph from a high 3/4 arm slot. 72 mph curveball showed consistent 12/6 rotation with good depth. 80 mph changeup was thrown at near fastball arm speed with a bit of late cut action. Balanced delivery with repeatable mechanics and command make Kollar solid  follow in this class.

Cade Negley, RHP/SS, Butler Area, Class of 2017

6-foot-1, 185-pound primary pitcher. Projectable right-hander was the most impressive arm of the day among the 32 pitchers in attendance. Sat 85-86 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some hip coil to his delivery and solid lower half actions. 73 mph curveball showed hard biting 11/5 rotation capable of being an out pitch at the next level. 73 mph changeup was thrown at fastball arm speed and displayed some lat sink.

Ryan Osman, RHP, Moon Area, Class of 2017

6-foot-3, 225-pound right-hander is still developing physically and adjusting to his mature frame. Sat 79-81 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some stiffness to his delivery. 68 mph curveball showed some looping action with 9/3 cut rotation. 75 mph changeup was telegraphed by slowing arm speed and throwing the pitch from a different arm slot.

Mason Petrosky, SS/RHP, Greater Latrobe, Class of 2017

5-foot-11, 165-pound primary middle infielder. Righty sat 72-74 from a 3/4 arm slot while topping at 76 mA ph. Arm slot leads to a flat break on his 63 mph curveball with 10/4 rotation. 65 mph changeup is thrown at near fastball arm speed. Delivery and mechanics position him to potentially make the move to a sidearm thrower. Present command and some physical maturation could lead to velocity gains making the switch an interesting possibility.

Cory Storm, RHP/SS, Hollidaysburg, Class of 2017

5-foot-9, 165-pound primary pitcher. Sat 84-86 from a loose 3/4 arm slot. Slider displayed sharp, late break at 74 mph. Storm struggled to command his 78 mph changeup on this day, but his first two pitches and athleticism are more than enough to make him a high follow in this class.

Hunter Treece, RHP/OF, Pine-Richland, Class of 2017

5-foot-10, 160-pound primary pitcher. Sat 80-81 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some two-seam run to his fastball. A bit of head snap in his delivery does not currently affect his command. Slider shows cutter action at 74 mph. 72 mph changeup is a quality pitch thrown at fastball arm speed with arm side run and some sink.

2018/2019 right-handed pitchers

Max Cebulak, RHP/2B, Central Catholic, Class of 2018

5-foot-10, 185-pound primary pitcher. Righty sat 73-75 from a high 3/4 arm slot while topping at 77 mph with some two-seam run to his fastball. 71 mph curveball showed cutter action with 10/4 rotation. Cebulak will benefit from continued physical maturation and strength gains along with the addition of a changeup to his assortment of pitches.

Bryce Grenet, RHP/3B, Pine-Richland, Class of 2018

5-foot-8, 175-pound primary pitcher. Righty sat 80-82 from a 3/4 arm slot. Fastball is heavy and shows some late sinking action. Still developing a feel for his 66 mph curveball with 10/4 rotation. 70 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed with a split grip is a quality pitch. Changeup shows two-seam rotation and some sink. Solid frame and loose delivery make Grenet a follow in this class.

Jacob Jewart, OF/RHP, Moniteau, Class of 2018

5-foot-7, 140-pound primary outfielder. Righty sat 76-78 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a quick arm action and some wrist wrap to his delivery. 61 mph curveball shows loopy 10/4 rotation. 59 mph changeup is thrown at near fastball arm speed and has similar action as his curveball.

Ben Mongelluzzo, OF/RHP, Penn-Trafford, Class of 2018

5-foot-11, 160-pound primary outfielder. Righty sat 77-78 with some cut action to his fastball from a high 3/4 arm slot. 67 mph curveball showed slider action with 11/5 rotation. Cutter sits at same velocity as fastball with more distinct break. Additional physical maturation and strength gains could lead to sigificant velocity gains in coming years.

Christian Pfrogner, OF/RHP, Penn Trafford, Class of 2018

5-foot-10, 155-pound primary outfielder. Sat 75-77 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with solid fastball command. 67 mph curveball displayed 11/5 rotation. Also flashed a 71 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed.

Christopher Wallace, RHP, Norwin, Class of 2018

Very projectable 6-foot-5, 235-pound right-handed pitcher. Sat 82-84 from a 3/4 arm slot with some crossfire action to his delivery. 72 mph slider showed flat 9-6 break. Displayed solid feel for a 75 mph changeup that he turns over with some sink. Still developing physically and maturing into his frame but upside is evident. Wallace has shown a 6-8 mph velocity spike in just the past 18 months and additional velocity is still likely.
