2016 TOS: Day 1 PBR Area Notebook

The 2016 Tournament of Stars is underway in Cary, NC, and Prep Baseball Report Executive Director Sean Duncan and National Supervisor Nathan Rode are in attendance. For the first two days of games—Wednesday and Thursday—they will provide two notebooks. Duncan will highlight players from states in PBR’s coverage area while Rode will cover the rest of the country.

Blayne EnlowCARY, NC – Despite his immense ability and lofty ranking, RHP Blayne Enlow isn’t the most well-known prospect among the loaded field at USA Baseball’s Tournament of Stars, chiefly because he’s only participated in local Louisiana events and the Prep Baseball Report Future Games.

Well, all that changed the first pitch out of his hand during the final game on Wednesday, as Enlow announced his presence with a 93-mph fastball. And he didn’t stop until he had put forth one of the most dominating pitching performances of the day.

Noticeably taller, the 6-foot-4, 169-pound 2017 right-hander from St. Amant HS in Louisiana is long, lean and highly athletic – basically, as projectable of a frame as any pitcher in attendance. But you don’t have to dream on the stuff, because it is present and real.

Enlow’s fastball sat 92-93 in the first inning with arm-side life, and pitched 90-93 the following two innings with, it seems, plenty more in the tank. Aside from his fastball, his ultra-quick arm enables him to spin a tight, late-breaking curveball that ranged between, 79-83 mph, a true swing-and-miss offering. Enlow worked fast and, best of all, filled up the zone with quality strikes.

In three scoreless innings, he struck out five, walked none and yielded one hit. Enlow, who’s currently ranked No. 7 overall in the Prep Baseball Report 2017 rankings, is committed to LSU.

Enlow wasn’t the only Louisiana prospect who had a big day. OF Jacob Pearson (West Monroe HS, LA) once again proved why he is one of the top left-handed hitting athletes in the 2017 class. Pearson turned on a fastball for a run-scoring triple to right-field, showing off his elite speed. He also reached on an error and finished 1-for-4. Pearson, who ran a 6.5 60 during Tuesday’s workout, also showed a vastly improved arm in the outfield. Earlier in the week, Pearson grabbed the headlines when he de-committed to Mississippi State and pledged to LSU. OF/LHP Daniel Cabrera (John Curtis HS, LA), another LSU recruit from Louisiana, also had a hit in three plate appearances.
