2018 Fall Review: Top 60s and Exit Velocities

Throughout the fall season, PBR scouts were covering the state of North Carolina. Whether it was a PBR event, an official PBR scouted event, or an workout a PBR scout covered, player statistics were reported with player evaluations. Video was also added to player profiles from PBR events. With over 800 colleges and universities subscribing to PBR, PBR is able to provide verified information, connecting schools and players from across North Carolina.
Today we begin our look at the statistics gathered from the fall season. First up are the timed sixty yard dashes and the exit velocities. Sixties were timed in a variety of ways and on several different surfaces in the fall. At PBR events, a laser timing system was used. At other events, a hand held watch would have been used. There were a couple of events with a soft surface from rain, while other events were run on firm grass or articificial turf surfaces.
The exit velocity testing is done in a controlled environment. In a batting cage, players are able to hit off a tee to record their exit velocity. While this method may not be as accurate as a live reading in a game or BP, it does allow all of our testing across our events to be consistent. The exit velocity testing gives us a feel for top end strength off the bat. There is a correlation between players that have done the drill prior, and their ability to maximize their exit velocity.

Top Timed 60 Yard Dashes
Christian Thomas (OF, Central Cabarrus HS, 2020) turned in the top 60 time of the fall, although he was just off his best recorded time. At the CBA Copperhead Scout Day in late August, Thomas ran a 6.62 on the laser timer. A plus runner, Thomas has run a 6.59 for PBR in the past. Ten players turned in sub-7.00 sixties during the fall. Below are the top five times from the fall, each under 6.90. Only 1 of these players is committed with 2019 OF Pres Cavenaugh (Myers Park HS) planning to attend Lenoir-Rhyne next fall.
