2018 TOS: Thursday Notebook

Sean Duncan and Nathan Rode

The 2018 Tournament of Stars takes place in Cary, NC, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex from June 19-23. Here are highlights from Thursday, the third day of games…

BRAVE 6, FREE 0
Among the top standouts on Thursday was RHP Jack Leiter (Delbarton HS, NJ), who started for Free in the first game. He is the son of Al Leiter and a Vanderbilt recruit. He stands at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, but shows big stuff. His fastball started out at 91-94 mph, before settling into the 88-91 range, though he still touched 92 in the third. His delivery is compact and in line with pronounced movements in his rocker step and leg kick. He comes through a high-3/4 slot and gets arm-side life to the fastball. His slider shows hard sweeping action and occasional downer break at 82-83, but his curveball has the makings of being an above average pitch. It’s shape is more 12/6 with depth and it ranges from 74-77. He allowed just three hits in four innings while striking out four, all on the curveball, including the last two batters he faced. Leiter is high school teammates with SS Anthony Volpe and got to face him twice, getting him to fly out and strike out.
