2022 Area Code Games: Standout Pitchers

Nathan Rode | Shooter Hunt

The Area Code Games returned to San Diego with prospects from across the country taking batting practice and playing five games. To wrap up coverage of the event, we’ll look at standout position players and pitchers.

ATHLETICS

+ RHP Reece Bueno (Redwood HS, CA), a Cal Poly recruit, had the tough task of facing a powerful Nationals lineup, but tossed 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six. The fastball was 86-91 mph, spinning at 2400-2500+ rpm with cut, as he ran it away from righties and really got inside to lefties. The breaking ball was sharp with around 2500 rpm, looking more like a slider at first and then gaining more depth as his outing progressed. It sat 78-80.

+ Bueno’s high school teammate, RHP Joseph Volchko (Redwood HS, CA), didn’t have the best stat line, but flashed intriguing stuff in his first inning of work. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Stanford recruit pitches from a high slot, getting downhill plane to his fastball, which has heavy action at 89-93. He spun two breaking balls--a mid-80s slider with downer break and a 12/6 curveball at 80-81.
