2022 Future Games - PNW Position Players Recap

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

The 2022 Future Games took place on July 27-30 at LakePoint in Emerson, Georgia. The event features the top uncommitted 2024 and 2025 prospects from across the country and was attended by more than 350 colleges from across all parts of the country.

Day 1 of the event is a pro-style workout for all participating position players with all of our standard showcase elements including the 60, vertical jump, defensive workouts and batting practice.

After that, each team of prospects plays a single game on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For the PNW, the schedule consisted of games against Team Select, Michigan and Wisconsin

The Pacific Northwest roster was comprised of 17 players in the 2024-2025 class, all of whom must be uncommitted.

Here are notes and a brief recap from the workout day as well as some reactions/notes from the 3 games the team participated in. .

2022 FUTURE GAMES

PACIFIC NORTHWEST Position players

Troy Osborne C / 1B / Grants Pass, OR / 2024

A standout performer during the workout day, Osborne proved he’s one of the more explosive athletes in the event with a 6.81 in his 60, 37.4 in max vertical and 2.54 RSI score. All validing the upside he has on the diamond. Defensively his receiving has continued to improve while catching quality velocity/stuff and he can really get out of his crouch and get into his catch and throw actions in a hurry. Also has shown the willingness to handle OF duties this week and has more than held it down. His strength/speed combo makes him a unique offensive threat and at 6’4, 195 lbs, he still has a considerable ceiling to tap into as a middle of the order bat. Offensively he uses a mature approach at the plate and has let the game come to him so far. Utilizes the middle of the field with present gap to gap power. Overall, athletic packages such as Osborne don’t come around very often and we don’t anticipate him staying on the board much longer.

Mark Wiepert C / 3B / Wilsonville, OR / 2025

Wiepert really displayed the versatility and athleticism this week. Handling multiple positions on defense as well as jumping on the mound. At 6’1, 180 lbs, he’s a quality runner for a 3B/C profile and moves with noticeable athleticism. Flashed above average arm strength from both positions during the workout and carried the defensive ability over into the games where he made quality plays throughout. At the plate, his ability to generate hard contact has consistently improved and there’s enough feel for the barrel to spray contact around diamond. He keeps his levers tight to his body and stays connected throughout the swing process. While his ceiling is likely highest as a position player with the chance to hit for power, he did touch 88 mph on the bump with his FB and it’s not out of reach to think his arm talent could continue to improve on the mound.

Brode Lyman C / 2B / Jesuit, OR / 2024

Lyman was both dependable and consistent across all 3 games this week. Collecting 3 hits offensively and doing a great job behind the plate handling multiple arms in tough conditions. His ability to receive and handle velocity/spin is noticeable right away and he continues to flash next level catch and throw actions. His athleticism fits at C and he should have no problem transitioning to the next level. Offensively he uses a slow, gathered load and controlled leg lift prior to his swing. Did a solid job attacking strikes all week and staying within his approach. Should continue to be a reliable contact threat who produces gap to gap power as well

Brody Bouwman 1B / 3B / Lynden Christian, WA / 2024

One of the top power bats in the ‘24 class. Bouwman has prototypical size for 1B at 6’3, 205 lbs with the frame/build to handle more weight and still maintain his athleticism. He’s an above average defender with exceptional range around the bag and has more speed than you typically see at the position. Could likely make an easy transition to a corner OF spot in the future if needed. There’s a lot to like offensively, starting with his peak bat speed in the 77-80 mph range. With a tall, upright stance and simple set up, he lets the barrel work freely while his length creates quality leverage/power potential. Controlled the zone well throughout the week and was able to get his ‘A’ swing off when he worked into plus counts.

Braden Fridgen RHP / 3B / Seattle Prep, WA / 2024

A powerful athlete at 6’2, 205 lbs, Fridgen was another 2-way prospect on the roster that flashed above average pop to go with exciting arm strength. At the plate, he starts tall/upright with high, active hands and some bat wiggle for rhythm. For a power bat, he avoids getting pull happy and spays in the middle of the diamond while keeping his hands inside of the ball. Produces peak EVs in the upper 90s. Defensively he fits the mold of a corner INF prospect long-term with the athleticism and size to handle 1B/3B. On the mound, he was tough and poised in his first inning, getting a big time save in G1 while stranding the tying run on the bases. The SL has been a huge weapon for him this week, showing hard, late break and up to 2,700 rpm. His FB topped at 86.7 and it’s easy to see him touching bigger numbers on the mound when he doesn’t have to worry about defense and hitting.

Rohne Klein 3B / RHP / Liberty, WA / 2024

One of the more polished LH bats in the class. Klein has the ability to hit for power and average with a sweet LH stroke and poised presence at the plate. Offensively he’s always shown an advanced swing with natural feel for the barrel and his frame has steadily matured since we first initially saw him back in 2020. He’s a sure handed defender on defense with the skillset to stick at corner INF long-term. At 6’3, 200 lbs, he does a solid job staying low through the play and overall has clean actions when ranging laterally. Plenty of arm strength to get the ball across the diamond with a short, compact arm path and ¾ release. Showed the power in G3 when he got off his ‘A’ swing and connected on the ball for a deep double into the RCF gap.

Caden Fahy SS / RHP / West Seattle, WA / 2024

Few players were more impressive in 2022 than Fahy. After making his PBR debut in Feb. at our Preseason ID, he helped guide West Seattle to a final 4 finish in the 3A state playoffs as the starting SS and a top of the line-up hitter. With the athleticism to play SS at the next level, Fahy has a valuable profile defensively while remaining a well-rounded player with his offensive potential. He has a quick first step while playing fast and low on defense. The arm gets the ball out quick from a tight, short path and he can adjust his slot as needed. At the plate, he has a ‘professional’ hitter approach with the ability to do damage in plus counts but also protect the zone and produce quality ABs. Had a big game offensively on Sat. against Michigan, going 2-3 with a RBI double.

Ian Pollard SS / 2B / Rex Putnam , OR / 2025

A polished INF prospect with natural feel for the game both defensively and at the plate, Pollard put together consistent performances all week. Reached base 5 times in 3 games, including 2 hits and 3 freebies. Offensively he had a keen eye in the box while showing a middle of the field, contact approach. Hits from a balanced set up with very few moving parts and a simple load. He’s light on his feet on defense with a sure glove hand and fluid tempo through the ball. High level actions on the exchange. Understands the speed of the play and avoids ever getting rushed to get the ball out. At 5’10, 155, there is still some physical upside to grow into and he has the frame to support additional weight

Owen Browning SS / RHP / Bainbridge, WA / 2024

Browning put on a show this summer with his LH power across multiple events. With one of the stronger, more physical frames in the class at 6’2, 200 lbs, he possesses a strong base and creates impressive bat speed with simple effort. It’s a typical LH power swing with an uphill path at contact but he still is able to get on-plane early and cover depth in the zone, avoiding being too ‘V’ shaped. Defensively, Browning can handle multiple INF positions with his actions and arm strength. His ultimate landing spot will likely be determined by how the bat continues to develop. From an approach standpoint, he showed strike zone discipline against quality arms and was consistently able to get his barrel to the ball and generated multiple hits in game play.

Emerson Fleck OF / RHP / Mead, WA / 2024

Fleck established himself as one of the top uncommitted players in the ‘24 class and a legitimate 2-way prospect at the next level. At the plate, went 3-5 with 3 BB and also pitched 2 scoreless innings in his lone appearance on the mound. Landed on the ‘Top Performers’ list and was Player of the Game in G3. On Saturday against Michigan, pitched 86-89 with both a SL and CH for strikes while making quick work of his 6 outs. His arm strength plays on the mound & from the OF where he touched 88 during the defensive workout. Offensively, he produced consistent contact & power across 3 games and brought a balanced collection of tools to the diamond. His strike zone discipline and contact skills really stood out as hitters routinely faced multiple arms each game with high level stuff but it didn’t faze him at all.

Will Crain RHP / OF / Eastside Catholic, WA / 2025

Lean, wiry athlete at 6’2, 170 lbs with speed and projection. Crain showed off his athleticism and tools during the workout day with a 6.90 in the 60 and was 87 mph from the OF on defense. Defensively possesses a strong OF profile with long, rangy strides and solid closing speed. Offensively he’s still growing into his frame and tapping into more power. There’s hand speed in the swing with lift to his pull-side. As a 2-way, Crain pitched in G2 and tapped into more velo than we had previously seen. Topping at 85 and pitching in the 83-84 range with both a CB at 71-73 and CH at 80-82. Working from the stretch, he pitches with a high takeaway at hand break with a long, loose arm path and high ¾ slot. Overall, Crain possesses one of the more balanced tool sets in the class. He showed next level potential on both sides of the diamond throughout the week and it’ll be exciting to see which area of his game makes the next big jump.

Elliot Oster CF / OF / Liberty, WA / 2024

Oster came onto the scene in the summer with a loud performance at our Top Prospect workout in June and carried that momentum into Future Games. A 6’2, 175 lb athlete with above average speed and an 88 mph arm from the OF. He has some of the best present tools and upside in the class. He’s posted impressive bat speed numbers in multiple events and has above average power potential with his upper 90s peak EV. He creates easy leverage with his swing and finishes with an uphill path. Power plays best to his pull-side presently. Overall, Oster showed his tools belong at a national level event and could make significant progress as he continues to get more reps and seasoning.

Lincoln Berg OF / LHP / Olympia, WA / 2025

One of the youngest players on the roster, Berg played a pivotal role as a FR outfielder late in the season for Olympia as they took home the 4A Washington State Championship. Offensively, he has the presence of a polished veteran at the plate with terrific pitch recognition skills, strike zone disciple and barrel control. Capable of spraying the ball to all fields and working counts, Berg has a quick left-handed stroke with easy hand speed and relaxed actions. Although it was a quiet showing offensively in terms of output, in 3 games he generated 5 freebies and showed the ability to recognize high level pitching. Defensively he’s a stout outfielder with crisp routes and an accurate arm. He contributed on the mound as well with a 3 pitch mix from the left-side and the ability to mix his offerings. Look for Berg to be one of the toughest outs in the state in 2023.
