2024 All-American Game Weekend: Workout Day, Data Dive

By Andy Sroka
Managing Editor, Scouting

As part of Prep Baseball All-American Game weekend, we sparked the start of the baseball festivities at the event’s official workout, held on Friday, Sept. 13, at loanDepot Stadium in Miami. We’ll be breaking down the statistical standouts from Friday’s workout, hosted in front of the sea of professional scouts and MLB decision-makers in attendance.

Before we dig into the metrics from Friday, we’ll prime you for the game itself, and details on when and where you can watch Saturday’s All-American Game live.

  • Where to watch: The game will air LIVE at 1 p.m. ET across NBC Sports streaming platforms, including the NBC Sports app itself or on Peacock, both of which can be downloaded wherever and however you stream your live sports. The game will also air live on SportsEngine app, the home of youth sports, by NBC Sports. Once you create a SportsEngine account, you will be able to watch the game on SportsEngine at this link.
  • Who is playing: The game is a battle of classes, as the Class of 2025 seniors will compete against the Class of 2026 juniors. You can find rosters and pitching rotations here.

Now, onto the leaderboards from the showcase portion of the event.

Traditionally, the 60-yard dash has been the in-event standard to help measure a player's speed tool. We implemented timing gates every 10 yards at this event to capture athletes’ quickness, explosiveness and reaction time. From there, we will calculate an athlete’s top-end speed in miles per hour. While the measurement still has its utility, the 10-yard split has started to become more and more applicable in determining the player's burst and reaction time in-game, whether that's in the outfield or on the basepaths.

Hard Hit percentage: MLB's Statcast defines a 'hard-hit ball' as one hit with an exit velocity of 95 mph or higher, and a player's "hard-hit rate" is simply showing the percentage of batted balls that were hit at 95 mph or more. Balls hit above that 95 mph threshold is generally when the batted-ball results markedly improve.

BLAST MOTION

HIGHEST AVG. HAND SPEED

Rank Name State School Class Pos Hand Speed (avg)
1 Seth Hernandez CA Corona 2025 RHP 24.4 mph
2 Owen Jenkins KY Lexington Catholic 2025 C 24.3 mph

4 Justice de Jong NY Poly Prep 2025 RHP 23.9 mph
5 Sean Dunlap IN Crown Point High School 2026 C 23.8 mph

Hand Speed: The observed speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

HIGHEST AVG. BAT SPEED

Rank Name State School Class Pos Bat Speed (avg)
1 Grady Emerson TX Argyle 2026 SS 80.4 mph

4 Cannon Goldin GA Buford High School 2025 OF 21.6 g
5 Owen Jenkins KY Lexington Catholic 2025 C 21.6 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.

VIZUAL EDGE

EDGE SCORE

Rank Name State School Class Pos Edge Score
1 Noah Wilson TN McCallie 2026 OF 79.00

4 John Stowers AL St. Paul's Episcopal 2026 C 77.24
5 Briggs McKenzie NC Corinth Holders 2025 LHP 75.26

The Edge Score is a comprehensive score out of 100 that takes the core-six visual skills into account, providing athletes, parents, coaches and scouts with a benchmark number for assessing an athlete’s overall visual ability. In general the higher the Edge Score, the higher chance of athletic success. Think of the Edge Score as the 'Sixth Metric' in the standard five tools that make up a ball player.

The average Edge Score for the 2020 MLB Draft Class was 79.3 (of hitters who completed a Vizual Edge test). MLB players we've worked with typically show stronger scores, with elite hitters scoring consistently above 87.0 on their Edge Score.
