Prep Baseball Report

2025 MLB Draft Board: First Edition

By Prep Baseball Draft HQ

Prep Baseball’s Draft HQ is prepping for the 2025 baseball season right around the corner, and the ongoing MLB Winter Meetings in Nashville tend to mark the start of the annual draft cycle, beginning with Tuesday's MLB Draft Lottery.

The third annual lottery determined the order of the first 18 picks, and two orgs shared the same odds at owning the top overall pick, the Rockies and the Marlins, each with a 22.45% chance at No. 1, and the Angels followed close behind at 17.96%. Well, here's how the lottery ultimately shook out:

  1. Nationals (10.20% chance at No. 1 pick)
  2. Angels (17.96%)
  3. Mariners (0.53%)
  4. Rockies (22.45%)
  5. Cardinals (0.82%)
  6. Pirates (5.31%)
  7. Marlins (22.45%)
  8. Blue Jays (7.48%)
  9. Reds (3.67%)
  10. White Sox (ineligible)
  11. Athletics (ineligible)
  12. Rangers (2.45%)
  13. Giants (1.90%)
  14. Rays (1.50%)
  15. Red Sox (1.22%)
  16. Twins (1.09%)
  17. Cubs (0.68%)
  18. Diamondbacks (0.27%)

Using this post-lottery information, we'll be jumping from org to org to project which teams will take which players in Draft HQ's first mock draft of this cycle, which we'll publish on Wednesday.

ABOUT THIS CLASS

What's apparent about this class in regards to the last few classes before it is the strength that's living inside its prep ranks. The top of the prep board features some serious star power in Ethan Holliday, but he's joined by premium prep pitching prospects like Seth Hernandez and Cam Appenzeller. Hernandez attends SoCal's Corona High School where he's teammates with a couple other names inside this top-20 (Brady Ebel; Billy Carlson), and the team's chase to repeat as CIF Southern Section champs in California will be an exciting side quest to follow this spring as we evaluate their performances leading up to July's MLB Draft.

Meanwhile, Holliday currently sits at No. 1 overall on the Prep Baseball Draft Board, and he could potentially be the first high schooler taken at 1-1 since his own brother, Jackson, was selected by the Orioles first overall in the 2022 Draft.

As it stands today, here's some other notes regarding the top-150 below:

  • High School: 78
  • College: 72
  • Infielders: 51
  • RHPs: 38
  • Outfielders: 36
  • LHPs: 23
  • Catchers: 11
