In the Box: An Open Letter to High School Hitters

Dear Frustrated High School Hitter,

Today is April 15, 2014.  Please let that sink in for a moment.

Today is a new day.  A day where you get to wake up and enjoy everything life has to offer us.  Oh, and yes, you get to play another game of baseball!  Not many people are as fortunate as you are to play baseball.  A game you may take for granted.  Take a moment to humble yourself and appreciate all that you have.

I want you to do something for me today.

I want you to throw away all of your papers that have your statistics written down on.  I want you to erase the bookmarks on your computer, phone and iPad that link up to websites that have your team and personal statistics.

Then take out a blank piece of paper and grab a pen.  I want you to write down your immediate goals for today for when you’re at the plate.  None of these goals will contain a performance statistic (i.e. batting average, doubles, HR, RBI, etc).  They will include things such as quality at-bats, situational hitting, mental approach, etc.  These are things that you can control.  Or as I like to say, “Control the controllables.”
