An Unbelievable Ride To The Pros For Richardson

Glen Richardson RHP / RHP / Massillon Jackson, OH / 2016

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Could Glen Richardson actually get drafted less than a year after Tommy John Surgery?

The 2016 Massillon Jackson graduate had a short window to show what he could do when pro scouts wanted to see where he stood in his rehabilitation. The answer was a pleasant one for Richardson, a 29th-round selection by the Texas Rangers in this month’s MLB Draft.

“Basically, I had two bullpens to show what I could do,” noted the right-handed hurler who just a month ago had committed to Cincinnati after two years at Sinclair. “Two (bullpens) to show where I was at the moment and how they project me in the future.”

Just last Aug. 4, Richardson underwent surgery and here he was attempting to impress scouts without being able to be at his best.

“It was out of my hands,” Richardson reflected. “I was not able to throw 100 percent. It was different knowing I was holding back on things but curious on how they would project me.

“The whole throwing program is set up that way,” Richardson continued about the need to get back to full-speed gradually. “I was used to holding back. But it was a different experience knowing they’re judging something that you’re not putting all you have into it.”

The Rangers saw enough to make Richardson the 869th pick in the draft.
