Area Code Underclass: Brewers

Shooter Hunt
Vice President, Scouting

With many of the country’s top future draft prospects in the 2024 & 2025 classes present in San Diego for the Underclass Area Code Games, PBR Vice President of Scouting, Shooter Hunt, was glued to the action with a front row seat. In total, seven teams competed with players from all around the country representing their region. The action was fast and furious with a full round of batting practice kicking things off before each team played four games in three days. The intense look provided even greater clarity as to who the next big MLB Draft prospects will be in coming years.

Derek Curiel OF / OF / Orange Lutheran , CA / 2024

There is already a professional look to the way that Curiel handles himself on the diamond, and it was most evident in this look. After struggling in the first game, the talented outfielder immediately bounced back with a pair of booming extra base hits in game two. Now 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, the LSU recruit appears to have added strength, but still offers the same fluid agility that makes it easy to envision a future five-tool player. Scooping into a load from the left side with a leg hang, Curiel is able to create impactful bat speed without exerting much effort. There is such an ease to the stroke that it borders on looking lethargic through zone, but the quickness is most definitely present, and he is just as willing to go the other way with authority as he is to turn on the ball. The gratefulness to his play extends to all phases, and he is equally as comfortable roaming center field as he is in the box. Hardly a new name in the scouting community, his track record will be long even before entering the 2024 draft year in 12 months.
