Arizona Preseason All-State

Recent travels to Phoenix and the campus of Arizona State University for PBR Arizona’s Preseason All-State event led to the uncovering of multiple, uncommitted players in the 2019 class who were waiting to be found In the Weeds. The spring is just kicking off in the southwest, so the early glimpse into the skills that these players hold is just the beginning compared to where they will be at the start of the summer. Of the seven players featured, there are two pitchers, two infielders, two outfielders, and a potential two-way player.

Joey Cammarata 1B / RHP / Chaparral, AZ / 2019

The first thing that stands out about Cammarata on the diamond is his big, durable, 6-foot-2, 235-pound frame. He produced a 92 mph exit velocity off the tee, but I thought it may have come off the bat even better than that in batting practice and in the game. Though his 7.64 60-yard dash time may be lower than where most college coaches are looking, I thought that the number was not indicative of his overall athleticism. Working at first base, Cammarata was fluent all-around with nimble footwork, and while he was not showcasing his arm on the day, the release was quick and accurate. At the plate, the strong right-hander sets up in a slight crouch with his weight evenly distributed and hands held high. Loading his hands down and back with a knee-knock stride, Cammarata demonstrates some quickness through the zone after a direct, uphill path. He shows a propensity to collapse his backside while forcing the lift of the baseball, but in-game the swing played a bit smoother, and allowed him to produce. Reports out of the state have said that Cammarata may have a chance to contribute on the mound in the future, and if true, could make him a valuable two-way player for a school at some level in college.
