Battle For the Arch: Statistical Analysis

By: Kevin Cronin
Illinois Staff

On Thursday, September 28, the PBR Illinois and PBR Missouri scouting staffs collaborated to host the first annual Battle for The Arch event. This invite-only event pitted several talented uncommitted prospects from both states against each other, starting with a workout portion and concluding with a quick game between the teams afterwards.

Now at the event’s conclusion our scouting staff will begin the post-event process, starting with this traditional stat story. Inside this piece you’ll find those who topped our statistical leaderboards, such as the 60-yard dash, max throwing velocities, and other data gathered via our staff.

We’ll continue to roll content out into next week, including a quick takeaways piece and we’ll also further unravel the data collected through our technological partners from the day’s showing. For now, read below to see which players in attendance put up worthy statistical outputs.

STAT STORY

+ OF Brysen Nepute (Christian Brothers College HS, 2023) was the top statistical outfielder of the entire event. Ranked 19th overall in Missouri’s junior class, Nepute ran a 6.77 in the 60-yard dash and threw the day’s hardest bullet from the outfield, topping at 92 mph to his target. He took a quality round of BP as well, barreling his best ball up at 91 mph with a peak estimated distance of 348 ft., per TrackMan. Nepute hopped on the mound later in his workout and ran his fastball up to 85 mph from the left side, too.

+ Two speedsters that each ran the fastest 60-yard dashes for their respective teams: INF Connor Earleywine (Jefferson City, MO; 2022) and OF Luke Range (Edwardsville, 2023). Earlywine showcased a quick-twitch, explosive athletic profile and led the entire event in the 60-yard dash, clocking a 6.53 on our lasers. As for Range, the 6-foot-1, 170-pound uncommitted junior ran a 6.75 for Team Illinois.

+ RHP/C Cannon Stuckey (Lafayette, 2023) and RHP Joseph Swanson (Pekin, 2022) recorded the top throwing velocities off the mound for their respective teams. A member of Missouri’s 2021 Future Games Team, Stuckey threw the hardest pitch during gameplay at 88.97 mph per trackman while sitting at 86-88 mph throughout with his fastball. He also put together an impressive workout, topping at 82 mph from behind the plate with the day’s quickest average pop times and a max exit velocity of 100 mph in BP, too. Swanson had the top fastball for Team Illinois, topping at 87 mph from a loose, live arm.

+ OF Caleb Copeland (Edwardsville, 2023) looks the part of yet another physical left-handed hitter in the Edwardsville lineup, following the likes of several prospects before him. He popped on our radar over the IHSA season and further solidified himself as a follow prospect in the state’s junior class after a noticeably loud round of BP at this event. Copeland’s best barrel was the day’s hardest, screaming off his bat at 105 mph.
