Creating backspin

*Trey Ganns – Northern Kentucky University Infielder*

One of the hot topics being discussed right now around a hitter’s swing is how to “create backspin.” If you tune into a game on a Monday night you’ll hear one way of doing it and then a different philosophy will be discussed the next night.

However, this is one of the “Myths” that Chris Burke is setting out to demystify. If a hitter goes into a swing “thinking backspin” then most of the time the result is not what they intended. By attempting to create backspin, what typically happens is they produce one of two swings:

1) an extremely choppy swing

or

2) a pop-fly driven swing.

If you consider the two tangible objects involved in a swing (a bat and a ball), we know that both are round objects. With that being the case, Chris Burke explains the most important component of generating the backspin you want is hitting the ball square on. From there, physics will take care of the rest!

Trey Ganns at Northern Kentucky University produced many of these swings during his extremely successful 2017 season. By consistently squaring the ball up, Ganns was able to drive the baseball gap to gap all season long with a conference leading 11 home runs.
