why do we separate?

*Brendan McKay. Two-Time John Olerud winner*

While Brendan McKay gives opposing team fits from the pitcher’s mound, he is doing the same in the batter’s box as one of the best two-way players in the game. The two-time John Olerud award winner (a finalist again in 2017), is one of the best on the mound and with the bat. For now, let’s focus on Brendan’s swing.

What makes his swing so special? First and foremost it is because he separates. The first part of every swing is Separation. Without it, the hitter has no chance, with it the hitter has an opportunity for real success. No matter where a hitter starts with his bat, all of the great ones will end up in the same position - a perfect separation. Separation is when the hands are going back while the front foot is going forward.

We can learn from one of the best college baseball players in the picture above and also in our Tip of the Week from Chris Burke: Swinging 101: Separation
