College Crosscheck: UCSB at CAL

BERKELEY, CA - Sunday afternoon at Evans Diamond, the home of the Cal-Berkeley Bears, I got a chance to see nine innings between two top West Coast teams as the visiting Gauchos from UC Santa Barbara came to town. Cal threw young pitchers during this game giving some their first taste of college ball and seeing how they would respond. I didn't get to see PBR Top College 150 player RHP Jared Horn didn't pitch during this outing, but I did see competitive action from both teams as it looked like everyone was excited to put on the jerseys for a gorgeous day. Here are the draft-eligible players who stood out, along with a few names to file away for coming draft classes.

Tommy Jew, 2019, R/R, CF, UC-Santa Barbara
6-0/180. Long and lean build on medium frame with wiry muscles throughout body. Built to be typical lead off CF with quick, twitchy speed and ability to find barrels for loud contact. Offensively utilizes a high hand set up with slightly opened, balanced stance while staying tall in posture. Hands stay away from body with bat N/S and wiggle pre-pitch. Lifts front leg while balancing weight into back hip before gaining ground; hands have slight bounce up/down while tucking back arm to body and getting on plane to be direct to the ball. Present bat speed showing ability to get through the ball with quick turns of the body; in game power (3R HR driven to LF) with flashes of bat control (Lined out to CF, RF with both balls barreled) and ability to drop down bunt. Above average runner (4.25 H-1st, 3.97 bunt) with full speed quickly using long, athletic gait to get down the line and stealing bases. In CF, used speed and athleticism while showing ability to track ball to glove-side with quick first step. Fringe-average arm that plays well in CF with quick release. Really set tone for offense getting on-base and making plays in CF.
