College Crosscheck: Eastern Illinois vs Illinois

David Seifert
Director of College Scouting

Prospect notes and highlights from 14 innings of action on Wednesday, Sept 19 as the Eastern Illinois Panthers traveled to Illinois Field to take on the Fighting Illini in a fall ball matchup.

ILLINOIS

Garrett Acton, JR, RHP
A transfer from Parkland College, Acton is a 6’2/225 strong bodied righty reliever with a quick arm and much effort, including a head snap finish. Ran his fastball up to 93, mostly sitting on 92 mph, while mixing in a tight-spinning slider thrown with good hand speed. Possessing an above average, two-pitch arsenal, look for Acton to nail down a role in the back end of the Illini bullpen this spring.

Branden Comia, FR, S/R, IF
Excellent college debut for the highly-touted recruit who was ranked No. 1 at his position and No. 4 in the state of Illinois during his senior season. The strong framed, switch-hitter recorded exit velocities of 98 and 100 mph during his two at-bats, one of which was a two-run triple off the wall in the 10th inning. Also displayed the same smooth actions, soft hands and left-side infield arm strength that he has always shown. Comia is an instinctual, all around performer who is quickly establishing himself as a key member of the Illinois lineup.
