College Crosscheck Week Seven: Texas vs Oklahoma

David Seifert
Director of College Scouting

It was off to Texas in Week Seven and the Red River Rivalry, matching the speed (51 SB) of the Sooners against the power (43 HR) of the Longhorns. However, Austin was not the final destination as this series was moved to Globe Life Field in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers. And it was a good move at that with Friday’s crowd numbering just over 5,000, Saturday in excess of 7,000 and Sunday 6,500.

The Longhorns won Friday’s series opener 7-1 in a matchup of top lefty prospects Pete Hansen for Texas against Sooner ace Jake Bennett. Game Two on Saturday pitted rising prospect David Sandlin for OU against veteran Longhorn Tristan Stevens. It was a scoreless duel until the 7th inning when Silas Ardoin homered for the Horns in the top half, and Sooners’ shortstop Peyton Graham countered with a scorched two-run single in the bottom half. Despite another Ardoin HR in the 9th, Oklahoma held on for a thrilling 4-2 victory. After trailing by six runs early, the Longhorns TKOd the Sooner bullpen to take the rubber match on Sunday by the score of 12-8. True to form, the Sooners stole eight bases (seven on Saturday) and the Longhorns slugged five home runs in the series.
