Day 1: Florida Limited Series

The first day of most major summer baseball events is usually reserved for premium arms to make their presence felt. Coaches and scouts bear down on the “arms” with the idea that they can see position players throughout the next couple of games while they can only see the pitcher once. Though there were many impressive arms throughout Day 1 (below) of the inaugural PBR Limited Series at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, it was the impressive work of position players that really stood out.

2019 Draft Watch:

Riley Greene, OF, Hagerty HS, FL 2019
Greene’s name is one to get familiar with quickly because, for the next year, you are going to be hearing a lot of it. Long, lean, and athletic with wiry-strength throughout, Greene is one of the top hitters in the 2019 class, and has continued to prove himself time after time. After working a full count in his first at-bat, he calmly stroked a single up the middle. In his second at-bat, the Florida recruit, smoked a single to right field. In his final at-bat, the 6-foot-3, 190-pounder unloaded on a pitch, and drove a deep triple to left-centerfield which allowed him to show off his long, graceful strides. Greene’s ability to hit at a high level is well-documented, but his comfort at the plate, and his ability to track pitches is what will give him a chance to be a special hitter moving forward.

Tyler Callihan, INF, Providence HS, FL 2019
After just missing multiple pitches in the first game of the day for Elite Squad, Callihan found his groove in the night cap. More physical now with thick upper-body strength, and seemingly taller than his listed 6-foot, 185-pound size, Callihan’s powerful left-handed stroke was on full display. He smacked a no-doubt home run over the right field fence utilizing his strong wrists and quick hands to turn on the pitch. While his power is eye-opening to the pull side, it is the lag that his barrel shows in the zone when driving the ball to the opposite field that may excite scouts in the future. The infielder tallied three hits in the game including a firm line drive single between shortstop and third base, and is one of the bigger power threats in the class.
