Draft League Data: Tucker Mitchell

David Shapero
Draft League Supervisor

Few Draft League hitters in recent weeks have swung the bat as well as West Virginia Black Bears catcher Tucker Mitchell. The 20-year-old N.C. State commit batted .359/.480 /.641 from June 12-27, hitting two home runs (including a grand slam), three doubles and one triple while racking up 11 RBI in 11 games.

Overall, Mitchell has produced a line of .317/.457/.512 in 23 games and ranks among the Draft League leaders in a host of categories with three home runs (tied-second), 42 totals bases (third), 26 hits (tied-fourth) and 19 RBI (tied-fourth). He also has reached base via 15 walks and a league-high seven hit-by-pitches compared to 21 strikeouts, often serving as the Black Bears’ leadoff hitter.

A 6-foot, 210-pound right-handed hitter, Mitchell’s Draft League success is a product of him consistently positioning himself to do damage at the plate.

Mitchell’s 90.3-mph average exit velocity and 39% Sweet Spot rate on line drives and fly balls so far this season speak to both his physical strength and bat speed as well as his knack for barreling the baseball. With an average launch angle of 17.2 degrees and a 19.5-degree average LA on hard-hit balls, Mitchell demonstrates an innate ability to get his barrel into an optimal launch angle in order to produce desired batted-ball outcomes. Those traits, as well as the fact that Mitchell ranks among the Draft League leaders in average batted-ball distance (204.4 feet), point to future power gains.

Mitchell’s ability to turn around even the best of fastballs only strengthens that projection. He’s done damage while being thrown heaters at a 58% clip in the Draft League -- 60% of which have been located in the heart of the zone -- slashing .438/.520/.750 with eight of his nine extra-base hits against the pitch.
