Player: Frankie Scalzo
Position: RHP

School: Grand Canyon

Scalzo has been a shutdown reliever for Grand Canyon since late in his sophomore year. He’s served as the team’s closer in 2021, racking up seven saves while averaging slightly better than a strikeout per inning. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound right-hander boasts a pair of plus pitches in a 93-96 mph (T97) fastball and a 78-80 mph curveball that has downer action and an above-average spin rate. Also at Scalzo’s disposal is an 86-88 mph changeup that he turns over well from a high three-quarters slot to impart arm-side fade. He’s comfortable throwing the pitch in hitters’ counts, too. Scalzo’s command continues to be a work in progress, although his strike-throwing ability has improved during his collegiate career.
