Draft League Spotlight: Joshua South

Player: Joshua South
Position: RHP

School: Belmont University

South garnered OVC All-Freshman honors in 2019 and was pegged as the conference’s preseason pitcher of the year heading into the shortened 2020 season, when he was also ticketed to pitch in the Cape. After being named OVC preseason pitcher of the year again in 2021, the 6-foot-3, 225-pound right-hander has delivered a 4.04 ERA with 47 strikeouts and 13 walks over 55.2 innings (10 starts). South knows how to sequence his pitches in order to keep hitters off-balance and generate weak contact. He creates good angle to the plate, working down in the zone consistently with his low-90s fastball. South’s go-to secondary offering is an upper-70s slider. He throws it often, imparting big, horizontal break, and also demonstrates feel for turning over a 78-81 mph changeup. South also has a strong track record as a strike-thrower -- one of the many attributes that should allow him to start at the next level.
