Draft League Spotlight: RJ Petit

Player: RJ Petit
Position: RHP
School: Charleston Southern

A 6-foot-8, 285-pound behemoth with an easy three-quarters arm action, Petit posted a 2.46 ERA as a freshman in 2019 and then was named preseason pitcher of the year by Big South coaches heading into 2020, but he made just two relief appearances before the season was canceled. He created serious buzz last summer in the Coastal Plain League, where he struck out all nine hitters he faced in one, three-inning stint and ran his fastball up to 96. In a three-inning start this past fall, Petit topped out at 95 and pitched comfortably at 92-94, flashing above-average spin rate up to 2482 rpm. He also shows inconsistent feel for a 85-87 mph changeup and a short 83-84 slider. Neither pitch looks like a knockout offering, but both have potential to wind up as solid-average type offerings in time. Given his enormous size and sound arm action, it’s easy to envision Petit throwing even harder down the road, particularly if he works in short stints out of a pro bullpen.
