Florida Draft Insider: FACA All-Star Weekend

By Nathan Rode and Rob Sidwell

Starting Friday in Sebring, FL, is the 2015 Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Baseball Weekend. Simply referred to as Sebring by scouts, it puts a bow on Florida’s high school season as the state’s top players come in for a workout and two games. They’re divided up into four teams, representing different regions. Heavily attended by scouts, it’s one last look before the draft. Prep Baseball Report’s Rob Sidwell scouted Florida for 18 years for major league teams and has been to Sebring many times. In this week’s Florida Draft Insider, he talks about the event, its purpose, why some players opt out and memorable performances.

No. 1, the purpose of it is to reward the top players in the state of Florida, the guys that had the best years, voted on by the coaches in their districts. And then also, guys that the scouts have the most interest in, to get one last look or maybe their bosses want to get one last look before the draft. To be able to follow these guys as closely to the draft as possible to kind of monitor, make sure they don’t get hurt, make sure there’s no injuries, make sure they are what you saw this spring.
