Ben Paugh RHP / 3B / Whetstone, OH / 2020

COLUMBUS - A year ago Ben Paugh went on a visit to Akron for football. Nearly a year later, the Whetstone senior has made a commitment to the Mid-American Conference school.

However, Paugh will not be playing on the gridiron at Akron, instead it will be on the diamond as a member of the Zips’ baseball program.

“I started talking to them at a camp on Feb. 9,” the 6-2 195-pounder said. “I just saw that they were having a camp and I showed up. I did really well there. I hadn’t been on the gun much in the off-season, I just let the chips fall as they may.”

It worked out quite nicely for the hard-throwing right-handed pitcher.

“My fastball was up to 91 and I spun my breaking ball well,” Paugh noted. “They talked to me the next day. Obviously, they liked my velocity and that second pitch. They said they think I can step into that closer role. I’ve done a lot of relief pitching with my summer team, so it’s a role I’m comfortable with and that I like.”

Hard work helped Paugh reach the impressive velo.
