Position Player Standouts:

Sam Petersen SS / OF / Ballard, IA / 2021

Each year at the Future Games players are given the floor to show off their skills, and hopefully impress some of the hundreds of college coaches that are in attendance. Petersen has done nothing but perform at an elite level for the first three days of the event, and his loudest moment to date came later on in Team Minnesota/Iowa’s game when he came into the game off the bench. The 6.6-runner blasted a deep home run over the left field wall continuing an onslaught of opposing pitching that has included multiple extra-base hits. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitter strikes the ball with surprising force given his developing, lean and athletic frame, and could come into even more power as it fills out. Perhaps even more exciting about Petersen as a prospect is his incessant motor which is easy to be seen every time he crosses the white line. His attempt to catch a foul ball down the right field line may have ultimately failed, but it was his ability to nearly make the play after an all out sprint and dive that will remain fresh in many minds.

John Rogers OF / LHP / Carmel, IN / 2021

Rogers’ aura of confidence stands out all over the field, and he seems to expect success in all facets of his game. The athletic left-handed hitter produced two loud hits on the day including a double to the opposite field in which he stayed on the ball to drive it before quickly getting out of the box in hopes of ending up on third base. He sits in an open, crouched stance with a slightly uphill path through the zone that is driven by quick hands. His speed and athleticism provide a strong chance for Rogers to stick in centerfield which will likely make him a player that many programs will want to have.

Alex Ritzer SS / 2B / Stillwater, MN / 2021

Ritzer entered the game late for Team Minnesota and smashed a double to deep right field after being robbed of a single in his first at-bat. The speedy-athlete is balanced in his approach with a solid base from a crouched stance. He flows through a natural load that allows his quick hands to work the barrel freely to the ball to produce some gap-to-gap power to all fields. He has shown very well throughout the event, and continues to impress in front of hundred of college coaches.

Southpaws:

Reed Gannon LHP / OF / Minooka, IL / 2021

Gannon’s crossfire delivery provided for some deception, and combined with a near ¾ slot, he was able to produce some arm side life to a fastball that worked 84-87 and touched 88mph. The lean, 6-foot-3, 170-pound, athletic left-hander flooded the zone with strikes as he sat on his back side down the mound before releasing with minimal effort. His slider worked across the zone in the mid 70s, and was thrown for strikes. Because of his athleticism and ability to repeat a consistent arm slot, Gannon has a strong chance of continuing to develop the breaking ball into a greater weapon down the line. His confidence in throwing strikes with the fastball put hitters on the defensive as he got ahead early and often, and it allowed the pitch to be effective. Overall, Gannon showed lots to like in his outing for Team Illinois, and was clearly a winner on the day.

Cole Cheatham LHP / OF / Ardmore, AL / 2021

Cheatham showcased some of the highest upside of the day as he aggressively attacked hitters with impressive pure-stuff. The wiry-athletic, 6-foot-1, 160-pound left-hander throws his glove out high as he drives down the mound, and delivers out of a high ¾ slot. His fastball sat 86-89 with normal effort and extension out front. The ball jumped out of his hand and made for some uncomfortable at-bats, and his curveball only helped to compound the discomfort. With great depth and 1/7 shape, the pitch appeared to be spun with high RPM, and exhibited the makings of a swing-and-miss weapon in the near future, as he landed it in the zone throughout. There is some funkiness to Cheatham’s delivery with different parts moving, and it helps to aid in his deception leading to multiple swings and misses. Given the quickness of his arm, and the intent with which he spins a tight breaking ball, Cheatham will have a strong chance to make a big jump as a pitcher in the near future.

Braden Quinn LHP / OF / New Fairfield, CT / 2021

Quinn, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound, long-limbed southpaw was up to 88mph in his outing which included multiple strikeouts. His fastball sat mostly 86-88, and though the consistency of his higher ¾ slot varied at times, when it all synced up he was able to drive the ball to the bottom of the zone on a downward plane. His curveball exhibited tight spin with 1/7, multi-tier break, and procured bad swings on the day. He threw it with confidence at a firmer, 74-76, and it was an obvious weapon that has the makings of being a true swing-and-miss offering in the future. Quinn throws over a higher front side, remaining linear down the mound as he “drops and drives” slightly aggressive before getting extension out front. With plenty of room to continue filling out, there is likely more velocity on the way as he matures. As he gains more feel for the movement patterns that his long limbs bring, his consistency will likely get better, which may make him a valuable starter at the next level.

Lights Out Right-Handers:

Caleb Logerwell RHP / 3B / Homeschool, GA / 2021

The more Logerwell pitched, the more confidence he gathered on the mound, and by the end of his two-inning outing, he had put an emphatic stamp on his performance by striking out the side. And he did so with a devastating slider, one that he spun between 2700-3027 rpm. His slider is a true knee-buckling putaway pitch, thrown aggressively between 75-79 mph with sharp, late two-plane bite and landed it consistently for strikes. Logerwell has a lean, athletic 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame and a loose, slinger arm action coming out of a 3/4 slot. He has a fast hand out front and his natural athleticism and competitiveness come to the fore on the mound. He works fast and challenges hitters. His fastball ranged between 86-88 mph and plays mostly true. Currently ranked No. 170 nationally in the 2021 class.

Blake McGehee RHP / SS / Tioga, LA / 2021

The 6-foot, 170-pound right-hander turned in the most efficient outing of the 2019 Future Games as he worked a perfect two innings in what felt like less than five total minutes. His fastball got on the plate in a hurry as it jumped out of the hand to the bottom of the zone. He threw strike after strike to both sides of the plate at 86-89, and there is likely more in the tank. Remaining compact throughout an uptempo, polished delivery, McGehee was able to find a consistent high ¾ arm slot throughout. His breaking ball backed up at times at 72-73, but it was thrown for a strike and played well of the fastball. He also showcased a 74mph changeup with fade that he showed comfort in throwing. Given his efficiency as a strike-thrower with three pitches, McGehee has a strong chance of continuing as a starter moving forward.
