The team from Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska started off the 2018 Prep Baseball Report Future Games with a bang by defeating the team from Indiana. Many players showed well and will look to continue their success against Team Illinois Friday, August 3rd.

Pitching:

2020 Tyler Ruhl (Norris High School, NE):

The 6’3, 190lbs RHP filled the zone early with a FB that sat consistent at 87-88, occasionally hitting an 89. Complimenting the FB was a BB with 11-5 tilt at 71-71 mph.

2020 Tyler Langenberg (Urbandale High School, IA):

Langenberg came consistently downhill at hitter with a FB 85-87 from the right side but kept hitters off balance with a 73-75mph 12-6 BB with hard, late two-plane movement that produced swings and miss results. A CH at 80 mph showed slight arm side movement late but needs continued development. Langenberg maintains consistent arm speed on all three pitches and has an easy, repeatable motion for his size.

2020 Cade Lommel (Delano High School, MN):

The LHP tossed the third inning and showed ease in his delivery and pitchability with four pitches from a high ¾ slot that were all used in a variety of counts. The FB ranged from 81-83 and was offset by a rare split-finger pitch at 72-74 with late, hard downward movement that is a great out pitch. The BB showed 2-8 slide to it but was a distant third option.

2020 Blake Mahmood (Benilde St. Margaret’s High School, MN)

The 6’2 RHP stuck with the heat all day throwing only one CH at 75 to finish the last batter of his outing. He showed command of a FB that that sat consistent at 88 and occasionally touched 89. Working exclusively from the stretch he has some funk to his delivery that has an effect on hitters timing.

2021 Gavin Zurn (Stillwater High School, MN)

Zurn got stronger as his outing went, starting with a FB 83-84 that was sitting 85-86 by the end of the inning. The FB is slightly heavy and when coupled with a BB at 66-69 with 11-5 break and loop at release, can be sneaky fast. The CH at 75 showed slight arm side run but both OS pitches need development.

2020 Hunter Day (Bloomington Jefferson High School, MN)

Day looked like a bulldog on the mound working quick and coming at hitters from a high ¾ slot. The FB sat consistent at 85-86 with late life to make it look like 88. The BB had good 10-4 shape to it as it covered two planes and came in consistently firm at 74 mph. Day’s power CH was also featured at 79-80 with short, hard arm side cutting movement.

2020 Tyler Tscherter (Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School, IA)

RHP Tscherter closed the game form MN/IA/NE and looked good working from a mid-¾ slot with a long, whippy arm action. He featured a FB 85-86 but his most impressive pitch was a CH at 76-77 that was throw in any and all counts. The CH had late, firm arm side action with great control and produced multiple swing and misses.

Hitters:

2021 Aaron Downs (Pella High School, IA)

The RHH SS was one of the highlighted players from workout day and continued it into game #1. Downs finished 2-3 with two triples, a walk, 5 RBI, and a screaming one hopper to the SS. Downs swing originates from hand at shoulder height that get the barrel in the zone early and maintains longevity in the zone throughout the swing. He showed opposite field power with both 3B going oppo.

2020 Andrue Henry (Dubuque Senior High School, IA)

Henry, a RHH 1B/3B, was 1-3 on the day but had multipoe productive AB’s. Henry got the scoring going early by pounding the ball on the ground with two strikes to bring in run #1 of the game. In the second inning he would send a two strike FB into the Right center gap for a double and two more RBI’s. Henry takes aggressive swings early in counts looking to do some damage and scales back to show a great two strike approach not commonly seen from hitters 6’4, 220. Plus hand speed allows him to see the ball deep and consistently putting the ball in play.
