Helium Hopefuls: Prep Position Players

By Shooter Hunt
Vice President, Scouting

Though they are already featured prominently on the DraftHQ Big Board, below is a look at 10 prep prospects who might rise even higher this spring, and each have all the tools necessary to get scouting departments buzzing by July.

On Jan. 4, @PBR DraftHQ released our first edition of its Big Board as the long march to the 2023 Draft is about to ignite. We also followed up the release of our board with a look at the potential candidates to hear their name selected first overall in the summer, as it stands now, as well as some insight into those journeying on the JUCO route who still look the part of MLB Draft prospects.

Today, we're continuing to look forward to the start of the season that's already just around the corner by breaking down a handful of prep position players with the kind of tool set it takes to leap into the first round following a strong spring season in front of pro scouts and crosscheckers across the country.

HELIUM HOPEFULS

Dillon Head OF / Homewood-Flossmoor, IL / 2023

Rankings: State: #1 Overall: #18

Few, if any, prospects made as big of an impression on the national circuit as Head did in ‘22, and that has positioned him as a strong helium candidate for the spring. Yes, even with the heights that he reached throughout the summer, the Chicago native and Clemson recruit might still rise higher next spring. An elite runner whose defensive capabilities position him in the upper echelon of the class with Bradfield-esq potential, Head also demonstrated the ability to drive the ball with some authority including some surprising ability to lift to the pull side. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed hitter possesses lightning quick hands at the plate, and his relatively limited plate appearances as a northern hitter only makes his production against elite arms that much more impressive. Although he likely enters the spring with stronger 2nd round buzz, there is clearly a path to becoming a top 30 pick, especially given the plus-makeup that he holds.
