High School Crosscheck: March 29-April 3

Nathan Rode and PBR Staff

Regular season action in California is underway and Shooter Hunt caught an early matchup between two SoCal shortstops—one being the No. 2 prospect in the country in Marcelo Mayer (Eastlake HS, CA) and the other a two-way player with serious helium potential in Carson Williams (Torrey Pines HS, CA).

Thanks to his sweet left-handed stroke and long, projectable frame at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, Mayer looks the part of a first-round pick and has the potential to go in the top five picks. In Shooter’s look, Mayer went 1-for-3 with a hit by pitch and getting down the line in 4.33 seconds on a groundout. Seemingly trying to do too much early and getting in a hole, he simplified his approach, which let his hands work and drive a single up the middle.
