High School Crosscheck: Week 2

Nathan Rode and PBR Staff

There has been plenty of preseason action recently at the high school level, but regular seasons are officially underway in warm-weather states. California, Florida, Louisiana and Texas all kicked things off last week and there was no shortage of coverage from the PBR staff.

In California, a strong pitching matchup took place between LHP/1B Erik Tolman (El Toro HS, CA) and RHP Kyle Luckham (El Dorado HS, CA). Tolman got the better of Luckham both on the mound and at the plate. He turned on a 91 mph fastball on the inner half for a no-doubt home run against Luckham in his first at-bat and added another off a reliever in his second at-bat. The Cal Poly recruit stands at 6-foot-2, 190 pounds and worked primarily with his fastball at 85-87 mph, touching 88-89. It’s not the velocity he showed at the Area Code Games at the end of last summer, but let’s remember that it’s still February. Tolman got three of his eight strikeouts on his curveball, which was 73-76, and he allowed just three hits and a walk.
