High School Crosscheck: Week 4

Nathan Rode and PBR Staff

Making his second regular season start on Tuesday, RHP Jared Kelley (Refugio HS, TX) dominated in typical fashion, overpowering hitters with his explosive fastball. In four innings of work, he struck out 12 of the 14 batters he faced. The only two to reach were a dropped third strike and a walk. All of his strikeouts came on the fastball.

Kelley sat 94-97 mph in the first two innings, hitting 98 three times in the second and 99 once. After that, he was 93-95. The velocity is premium on its own, but he does it with extreme ease and the ball jumps out of his hand. The breaking ball has always been the question for him and while it looked better in this outing, it still has some development needed for it to be an out pitch. It ranged from 78-82. There was only one left-handed hitter in the lineup, so Kelley threw just two changeups, but they were above average with arm-side run at 81-82.
