Thursday, March 27 Games

No. 2 St. Laurence 12, Pomona (CO) 0
In the Chris Moon Memorial Tournament in Tucson (AZ), the Vikings crushed Pomona (CO) in five innings behind a one-hit masterpiece from NIU-bound Brad Wood (1-0). Wood faced 17 Pomona hitters, striking out 13 and allowing one hit and one walk. Not much to do for the Viking defense today in the desert heat. Purdue-bound Mike Kornacker put an end to the festivities when he launched a three-run walk-off bomb in the bottom of the fifth. Seniors Roger Wilson and Kevin White each had two hits and an RBI. Senior Mike Miller had a triple and an RBI while Wood helped himself with a double and an RBI.  “Brad was just great today,” said St. Laurence head coach Pete Lotus via text from Tucson. “Brad has been great all week.” St. Laurence will face Ralston Valley (CO) (6-0) for the Chris Moon Memorial Tournament Championship on Friday.

No. 9 Springfield Sacred-Heart Griffin 14, No. 52 Barrington 3
The Cyclones put this one to bed with a 10-run explosion in the bottom of the fifth, at Comstock Field in Springfield. Leading just 4-3 as the game went to the home half of the fifth, SHG (3-0) sent 16 men to the plate, the last being Cyclone junior RHP Matt Richey, whose three-run walk-off bomb gave Richey (1-0) the win on the mound as well. All Richie did on the mound was fire a five-inning no-no at the Broncos with 10 strikeouts making him a strong candidate for the first Porsche Player of the Week. Richey who also doubled finished with four RBI.  Junior Clayton Taylor chipped in with two hits, three run scored and two RBI for SHG. Barrington falls to 2-1 on the season.

No. 19 Brother Rice 2, No. 18 Huntley 0
In a battle of Top 20 teams in Illinois, Brother Rice (4-1) shutdown Huntley (1-1) behind a combined three-hit shutout from Crusader starting pitcher Ryan Kutt (2-0) and senior RHP Kevin Biondic. Kutt allowed three hits in his five stellar innings to pick up the win while Biondic fired two hitless innings to nail down the save. Biondic broke up a scoreless game when he homered in the fourth and Erich Lieser continued his torrid hitting with two more hits. Lieser is hitting .500 with a homer and nine RBI. Huntley (1-1) was led by Chicago State-bound SS Matt Sullivan, who had two of the three Red Raider hits. Drury (MO) College-bound RHP Nick Constantino (0-1) was the hard-luck loser allowing just Biondic’s bomb in his stellar five innings of work. Constantino fanned seven. The game was played at Plunkett Field on the campus of Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst.
