In the Weeds: Louisiana

By Shooter Hunt
National Crosschecker

In a new segment at the state level called, In the Weeds, PBR National Crosschecker, Shooter Hunt, takes a look at uncommitted players regardless of class whose skills and intangibles sometimes get missed in a showcase setting, but whose value to a good team at the next level is immeasurable. Some of the players included in this segment are under the radar, others have been overlooked, and some are late bloomers and fast-rising. Whatever the reason, our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff has identified many uncommitted prospects who can thrive with the right fit at some collegiate level. This week, In the Weeds, takes a look into the talented 2018 class in the state of Louisiana. With some pitchers with big frames that are blossoming later, and position players with natural baseball instincts, this week’s crop of players will, surely, have an impact at some collegiate level.

Bryce Scioneaux, RHP, Destrehan HS, LA, 2018
When he’s not on the gridiron playing defense for a perennial state power, Scioneaux is on the mound trying to dice up hitters. At 6-foot-2, 215-pounds, Scioneaux is a physical right-hander with impressive athleticism for his size. Standing tall on the mound with wide shoulders, Scioneaux gracefully completes a compact, simple motion before aggressively striding out and delivering out of a higher ¾ slot. Scioneaux’s fastball has been up to 88 mph, and settles in at 84-87. HIs higher ¾ slot allows him to pull down on his curveball giving it near 12/6 break with sharp bite (71-72). Scioneaux also flashes a developing changeup, with fade, at 74-75. Given the abundance of riches that the state of Louisiana has to offer in the form of baseball talent, a player like Scioneaux can sometimes go overlooked because of his talent on the football field, and the time that he, most likely, commits to practicing that sport. Because of this, I believe that some coach will be quite pleased with the rapid progress of Scioneaux on the mound when given the time to focus primarily on baseball.
