Insider: American Legion World Series Recap

SHELBY, N.C. - Henderson, Nevada nipped Creighton Prep, Nebraska 2-1 to win the 91st annual American Legion World Series.

Shane Spencer, who tossed a 1-hitter in a 1-0 pool play win over Shrewsbury, Massachusetts,  threw a 3-hitter with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks in the championship game for Nevada, which lost to Nebraska 9-1 in the opening game of pool play. J.J. Smith had a pair of singles, 2 stolen bases and scored a run for Nevada (56-10).

Joshua Culliver, the 3rd-ranked player in the Nebraska 2017 class, was the hard-luck loser for Creighton Prep (59-5). Culliver, a University of Minnesota recruit, was the winning pitcher in the first-game win over Nevada.

At 1-2 in pool play, Henderson won the Stripes Division tiebreaker over Midland, Mich., and Shrewsbury to advance to the semifinals where the Nevada squad defeated Bryant, Arkansas, 7-3. Nebraska, which went 3-0 in pool play, topped Randolph County, N.C. 3-1 in the other semifinal.

Lewiston, Idaho and Hopewell, N.J. were 1-2 in pool play in the Stars Division.
