Junior College Sleepers

Mike Rosenbaum and Tad Slowik

Last week, The Hotlist highlighted junior college standouts from various tournaments and scout days this fall. Next up, we have some sleepers who could break out during the spring season.

Colby Backus, OF, Walters State CC (TN)
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound outfielder is a big, physical athlete with loud tools. Despite his size, Backus is capable of running a 6.5-second 60 and showcases his strength at the plate in the form of 108-plus mph exit velocities from the right side.

Matt Etzel, CF, Panola CC (TX)
At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Etzel is another physical athlete who can fly (6.4 60). The Texas A&M kickback gets good jumps and covers a lot of ground in the outfield, where he also shows a strong, accurate arm. He could be a plus defender. Offensively, the left-handed hitter has a solid approach at the plate and makes consistent hard contact, driving the ball with power potential.
