MLB Regional Scouting Series: Southeast Standouts

CJ Butts
North Florida Scouting Director

This weekend Major League Baseball hosted their Southeast Regional Scouting Series at Spectrum Field in Clearwater, FL. There was no shortage of talent on hand as quite a few guys stood out. Offensively, Edwin Arroyo (Arecibo Baseball Academy, PR), John Malcom (Univ. of Tampa), and Hector Nieves led the way.

Arroyo flashed a combination of quickness and speed while also maintaining strength at the plate. Malcom, a stout left handed hitting first baseman displayed the pop in the bat along with plus bat speed. He had competitive at bats and was disciplined enough at the plate that the walks could trend upward. Hector Nieves, a middle infielder with elite athleticism might be the most talked about position player in attendance. With the size and athleticism to play anywhere on the field he looked most comfortable at SS and caught some attention with the arm strength across the diamond. With a smooth stroke from the left side and packing all the tools under the hood, Nieves should garner a lot of attention in the coming months.
