Session II of the Maryland Preseason All-State featured 75 players from across the Old Line State, Delaware, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Players were put through a pro-style workout and threw bullpens in front of our PBR Maryland staff with TrackMan and Blast on hand to capture additional data throughout the event. Below are evaluations on the 20 outfielders at the event.

OUTFIELDERS

(Listed Alphabetically)

Liam Bowen OF / RHP / Walt Whitman, MD / 2023

Body: 6’1’’, 180 pounds. Long and projectable frame with athleticism in the movements.
Hit: RHH. Begins with a balanced, athletic setup as the feet are even at shoulder-width, loose approach in the box. Early leg hang to a high position at mid chest level with control on the move outward towards the pitcher, unleashing the bat head with good stretch through a slightly uphill path. Recorded an impressive 57% line drive rate swinging with high-intent during his BP round. Mostly LCF approach and liked to get leverage at the point of contact; generated interesting rotational acceleration numbers (20.4 G’s of force via Blast Motion).
Power: 92 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Recorded a 312 foot peak batted ball distance hinting at a solid power floor at the moment. Should be able to plug both gaps with occasional HR juice to the pull-side when getting extended. XBH potential is real.
Arm: RH. OF - 89 mph. Fluid and rhythmic arm stroke from a quick, moderate arm-circled, over the top slot. Accurate and showed plenty of carry towards the plate.
Defense: Advanced defender with early downhill momentum in the routes, got to the spot on time with the left foot and fielded with a trusted glove hand off the left side of his body with a smooth funnel inward to the chest line. Feel for pace was evident during his defensive evaluation.
Run: 7.14 60-yard time.

Dominic Casale OF / 2B / Loyola Blakefield, MD / 2022

Body: 5’8’’, 145 pounds. Lean, athletic with feel present.
Hit: RHH. Balanced, even setup with a slight bend in the knees. Short lift and replace unleashed the barrel through a slightly vertical path while holding the backside hip really well in the swing. Tight turns with good extension out in front; notched a 39% line drive rate during his batting practice round, peppering the middle of the field.
Power: 85 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Developing doubles power (236 foot peak batted ball distance via Trackman Baseball).
Arm: RH. OF - 81 mph. Short, high ¾ slot with accuracy towards the plate.
Defense: Adequate footwork arriving on time with a soft glove hand off his left foot. Stop and go at times, but stayed low throughout. Projects to slot into a CF position down the line with LF an option as well.
Run: 6.91 60-yard time.

Gage Joseph OF / RHP / Cape Henlopen (DE), MD / 2024

Body: 6’0’’, 150 pounds. Long and projectable frame with a high-waisted build.
Hit: RHH. Open, loose setup with a slight bend in the knees as the barrel rested on the shoulder. Utilized a lift and replace stride in order to initiate the bat head through a flat path into the hitting zone. Repeatable, adjustable stroke and got off good swings with consistency. Minor weight-shift through the front side generating some leverage at the front of the plate; mostly middle of the field approach during batting practice. A 67% line drive rate played admirably into his desired result while accruing a standout 53% hard hit rate (batted balls over 90 mph) as well.
Power: 96 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Easy doubles power at the moment with ability to run it out of the yard to pull if he catches it right (331 foot peak batted ball distance).
Arm: RH. OF - 81 mph. Loose, high ¾ slot with good carry and accuracy towards the plate.
Defense: Got the chest downhill early with active footwork arriving on time. Weight and posture was over the toes allowing for good pace and a quick trigger from his position during defensive evaluations. Projects to slot into a LF position for now.
Run: 7.01 60-yard time.

Conner Keys OF / LHP / Calvert Hall, MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 185 pounds. Strong, athletic frame with feel for his body present.
Hit: Switch. Mirrored from both sides, the only difference being a leg hang as a LHH compared to no stride as a RHH; more pop from the left side. Wide, athletic setup with a slight bend in the knees; initiated the hands through a twitchy, adjustable path into the hitting zone. Stayed direct through a slightly vertical path as LHH. Very methodical in the approach while peppering the middle of the field with hard line drive contact (36% line drive rate via Trackman Baseball). A 61% on-plane efficiency points towards solid bat to ball skills and 16+ G’s of rotational acceleration (average; Blast Motion) hints at an interesting power ceiling down the road.
Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Up to a 326 foot peak batted ball distance. Juice plays from the left side with ability to produce consistent XBH.
Arm: LH. OF - 79 mph. INF - 77 mph. OF - Full arm circle with fluidity, INF - quick V-slot with a fast release.
Defense: OF - Approached with finesse and good posture on the way through, used a soft glove hand off the right foot on the approach; feel for pace and down chest angles at the fielding window. INF - Moved well laterally with above-average feel around the bag at first; offers legitimate positional flexibility either at a corner INF spot or 1B.
Run: 7.55 60-yard time.

Utilized a leg hang with good control on the way through unleashing a twitchy and whippy, flat path into the hitting zone. Above-average barrel awareness present with some juice to the pull-side when catching it out in front; mainly middle of the field approach from gap to gap. Impressive weight transfer into a stiff front side and showcased advanced swing mechanics featuring repeatability and quickness (short A to B path). This, coupled with solid bat to ball skills (53% line drive rate via Trackman) will make him a very tough out as he continues maturing.
Power: 86 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power with high intent in the box though he profiles as a top of the order table setter at the moment.
Arm: RH. OF - 85 mph. Quick arm through an over the top slot, good extension on the front side and accuracy at head level.
Defense: Above-average defensive profile playing low to the ground with range in either direction. Plays quicker than the 60-time would suggest, can handle any of the three outfield positions, though he might have a home in CF with the body type, game he brings to the table. Trusted a soft glove hand off the left side of his body with quality pace during his defensive evaluation.
Run: 7.04 60-yard time.

Demetre Koutras, III OF / 1B / River hill , MD / 2023

Mostly middle / pull side approach while hitting into a stiff front side. Showcased present juice (324 foot batted ball distance) while not giving up bat to ball skills (54% line drive rate). Swing and approach should allow him to hit for some average down the line as well.
Power: 93 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Current doubles power and ability to hit for XBH. Should continue molding into a more premiere power threat as he keeps developing.
Arm: RH. OF - 79 mph. Long, full arm circle with rhythm on the takeaway, accurate throws.
Defense: With the foot speed present and a quick first step, you’re looking at possible CF qualities. The frame might lead to a move to a corner spot with a power profile making the most sense. Light on his toes with down chest angles and a trusted glove hand sometimes fielding between the legs with two hands.
Run: 6.91 60-yard time.

Ryan Lawrence OF / RHP / St. Michaels , MD / 2023

Body: 6’2’’, 180 pounds. Lengthy, athletic frame with some projection present (room to fill out).

Notched some off the charts Blast Motion numbers: 24.6 mph average hand speed, 75.3 mph average bat speed, and 60% on-plane efficiency, which point towards a developing, high-level power profile down the line. Featured loft in the approach to the pull side during batting practice and recorded an eye-popping 75% hard hit rate (batted balls over 90 mph).
