Maryland Preseason Preview: Corner Infield Analysis

Over 30 players participated at this year's Maryland Preseason Preview at the Metrix Baseball Training Facility. Players were put through a pro-style workout that included bullpens for pitchers. Our PBR Maryland scouting staff was on hand along with TrackMan and Blast to record data throughout the event. Below are evaluations on the 9 corner infielders at the event. 

 

Corner Infielders

(Listed Alphabetically)

Chris Baynard OF / 1B / Easton , MD / 2023

Body: 6’2’’, 180 pounds. Strong, athletic, projectable body frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, upright stance at the dish. Slight leg kick load with solid hand separation and a rhythmic approach. Creates solid extension through and past contact, staying behind the ball well with a slightly uphill swing path. Strong two-handed finish with a solid gap-to-gap line drive approach. 
Power: 86 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Some pull side pop present. 
Arm: RH. OF - 78 mph. INF - 70 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well in the outfield with quick, active feet.  Fields the ball out in front on the glove hand side with quick, clean exchanges and throws that showed accuracy. Plays through the ball in the infield with quick, active feet. Fields the ball out in front with soft hands.  
Run: 4.57 Home to first base time.


Bradley DeMoss RHP / 1B / Severna Park , MD / 2022

Body: 6’0”, 155 pounds. Tall, athletic frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a tall, balanced, slightly closed stance at the plate. Smooth, quick back load with some hand separation and a shorter stride. Hands are direct to contact with some bat speed and solid extension throughout. Hands stay inside the ball well with a slightly uphill swing path and a smooth middle of the field line drive approach. 
Power: 86 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Present gap-to-gap pop with more projected. 
Arm: RH. INF - 68 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well in the infield, fielding it out in front and funneling to the belt. Active feet with solid lateral range and quick, clean transfers.  
Run: 4.52 Home to first base time.


Warner Harper 3B / SS / St. Maria Goretti , MD / 2024

Body: 6’3”, 230 pounds. Big, physical frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, square stance at the dish. Smooth back load with a quick, short stride. Simple, quiet approach with a slightly uphill swing path. Some lower half involvement with a strong two-handed finish and a solid middle of the field approach. 
Power: 84 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Some gap-to-gap pop. 
Arm: RH. INF - 67 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball with active feet. Fields the ball in closer to the body, gathering at the belt with clean transfers. 
Run: 4.81 Home to first base time.


Wyatt Hellens 3B / 1B / Sussex Central, DE / 2023

Body: 5’11”, 180 pounds. Strong, athletic frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a tall, balanced, open stance at the plate. Smooth, rhythmic back load with some hand separation. Attacks the ball with intent, utilizing quick hands and some bat speed through contact. Uphill swing path with solid extension through and past contact and strong lower half involvement. Keeps his hands inside the ball well with some barrel control and a strong gap-to-gap line drive approach. 
Power: 88 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Power present to the gaps and alleys with more projected as his body continues to fill out. 
Arm: RH. INF - 73 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a low three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well with quick, active feet in the infield. Fields the ball out in front, funneling to the belt with clean transfers. Throws showed some accuracy with carry. 
Run: 4.88 Home to first base time.


Griffin Madden RHP / 1B / Allegany, MD / 2023

Body: 6’2”, 180 pounds. Strong, athletic, projectable frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a tall, balanced, slightly open stance at the plate. Smooth, fluid back load with really nice hand separation. Short in to out stride with quick hands and fast bat speed through contact. Attacks the ball with controlled aggression and a more level bat path. Creates solid extension through and past contact with evident barrel awareness. Strong lower half involvement with a slight recoil and a really nice middle of the field line drive approach. 
Power: 99 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Power to the gaps and alleys is evident with even more projected as his body continues to fill out. 
Arm: RH. INF - 80 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball in the infield with quick, fluid actions. Fields the ball out in front with soft hands and funnels to the belt with quick, clean exchanges. Throws were accurate and showed carry to the target. 
Run: 4.56 Home to first base time.


Matthew Roche 3B / 1B / Churchill, MD / 2022

Body: 6’0”, 175 pounds. Strong, athletic frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from an open, balanced stance at the plate. Short, quick back load with solid hand separation and quick bat speed through contact. Stays behind the ball well with a compact swing and a slightly uphill bat path. Keeps his hands inside the ball well with excellent extension through and past contact. Ball explodes off the bat with strong lower half involvement and a powerful gap-to-gap line drive approach.  
Power: 94 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Power to the gaps and alleys is present with more projected. 
Arm: RH. INF - 80 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well with quick, active feet in the infield. Fields the ball out in front, funneling to the chest with clean exchanges. Loose, clean actions with solid range side to side. 
Run: 4.28 Home to first base time.


Zachary Rose C / 1B / Richard Montgomery, MD / 2023

Body: 5’9’’, 150 pounds. Athletic
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched, closed stance at the dish. Quick back load with some hand separation and a shorter stride. Hands stay inside the ball well with some bat speed and a level swing path. Stays behind the ball with a relaxed approach, peppering balls consistently into the gaps and alleys during his BP rounds.
Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Gap to gap pop present. 
Arm: RH. C - 63 mph. INF - 63 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from an over the top slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.16 - 2.33. Gains ground on throws from behind the dish and replaces feet well. Quick, active feet with clean exchanges and throws that showed some accuracy. Fields the ball out in front with soft hands in the infield. Creates solid momentum towards the target with clean exchanges.  
Run: 4.27 Home to first base time.


Ryan Smolen 1B / 3B / DeMatha Catholic, MD / 2021

Body: 6’0”, 200 pounds. Strong body type. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, square, slightly crouched stance at the dish. Smooth back load with solid hand separation. Gets the foot down early and explodes through contact with quick hands and some bat speed through contact. Slightly uphill swing path, keeping his hands inside the ball well with a short, compact swing. Ball comes off the bat really well with a smooth middle of the field line drive approach. Finishes strong with two hands. 
Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Power is present to the middle of the field. 
Arm: RH. INF - 67 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well with quick feet. Fields the ball out in front with soft hands, funneling to the belt with quick, clean exchanges. 
Run: 4.59 Home to first base time.


Beck Urofsky 3B / RHP / Bethesda-Chevy Chase, MD / 2022

Body: 6’3”, 200 pounds. Tall, strong, projectable frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a tall, balanced stance at the plate. Slight hand wiggle with quick twitch actions and a smooth back load. Solid hand separation with a slightly closed off stride. Attacks the ball with intent, utilizing quick hands and fast bat speed through contact. Slightly uphill swing path with strong lower half involvement and really nice extension through and past contact. Ball explodes off the bat with evident barrel control and awareness. Strong middle of the field approach. 
Power: 97 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Strength and power is present to the gaps and alleys. 
Arm: RH. INF - 85 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from an over the top slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball in the infield with active feet. Fields the ball out in front with soft hands, funneling to the belt with a slight glove tap in exchange. Clean transfers with solid lateral range. Throws showed accuracy and carry. 
Run: 4.24 Home to first base time.
