Maryland Preseason Preview: Middle Infield Analysis

Over 30 players participated at this year's Maryland Preseason Preview at the Metrix Baseball Training Facility. Players were put through a pro-style workout that included bullpens for pitchers. Our PBR Maryland scouting staff was on hand along with TrackMan and Blast to record data throughout the event. Below are evaluations on the 7 pitchers at the event. 

 

Middle Infielders

(Listed Alphabetically)

Kameron Becker SS / RHP / Winters Mill, MD / 2023

Body: 5’10”, 140 pounds. Athletic body type.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched, open stance. Short, rhythmic back load with solid hand separation and a toe-tap load stride. Stays short to the ball and attacks the ball with intent. Stays on the ball well with a level swing path and some bat speed. Two-handed finish with some extension and recoil with a solid middle of the field line drive approach. 
Power: 80 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. 
Arm: RH. INF - 66 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Works through the ball with active feet in the infield, fielding it out in front and funnels to the chest. Clean transfers with a slight glove tap. Loose actions with soft hands and some lateral range. 
Run: 4.82 Home to first base time.


Sean Foster SS / RHP / Leonardtown, MD / 2023

Body: 5’10”, 155 pounds. Athletic, lean frame.
Hit: RHH. Hits from an upright, slightly open stance at the plate. Slight back load with hands pre-set. Short, controlled stride with hands direct to contact and a more level swing path. Stays behind the ball well with solid balance throughout and some bat speed. Relaxed, fluid stroke with a really nice middle of the field line drive approach. 
Power: 85 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Gap-to-gap pop present with more projected. 
Arm: RH. INF - 76 mph. Throws with longer arm action from an over the top slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well in the infield, fielding it out in front. Funnels to the belt with clean, quick exchanges. Shows solid lateral movement with the ability to throw from various arm slots. 
Run: 4.47 Home to first base time.


Lion Gardiner RHP / 2B / Walt Whitman, MD / 2023

Body: 5’9”, 140 pounds. Athletic, lanky frame.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched stance at the plate. Smooth back load with some hand separation and solid balance throughout. Hands drop slightly before contact with a more level swing path. Attacks the ball with intent with quick hands and some bat speed. Lower half involvement is present with a really nice middle of the field line drive approach. Finishes strong with two-hands.   
Power: 80 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. 
Arm: RH. INF - 82 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball with active feet in the infield. Fields the ball out in front, funneling to the belt with a quick glove-tap into clean exchanges. Solid range side to side with the ability to throw from various arm slots. Throws showed accuracy and carry. 
Run: 4.63 Home to first base time.


Thor Hildebrand SS / RHP / North County, MD / 2023

Body: 6’1”, 170 pounds. Long, athletic frame with some strength and projection.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a tall, slightly opened stance at the plate. Smooth back load with solid hand separation and an elongated stride. Keeps his hands inside the ball, creating quick bat speed through the zone with really nice extension through and past contact. Some lower half involvement with an uphill swing path and a solid gap-to-gap approach. High and strong two-handed finish. 
Power: 80 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Power into the gaps and alleys is present with more projected as he grows into his body. 
Arm: RH. INF - 75 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well with active feet in the infield. Fields the ball out in front with soft hands, funneling it to the chest with clean exchanges. Throws showed some accuracy and carry. 
Run: 4.56 Home to first base time.


Alec Jones SS / 2B / Heritage, VA / 2024

Body: 5’10”, 150 pounds. Athletic
Hit: LHH. Hits from a tall, balanced square stance at the plate. Rhythmic, quiet back load with solid hand separation. Stays behind the ball really well with a direct path to contact. Attacks the ball with intent, utilizing the lower half well. Keeps his hands inside the ball nicely with a solid gap-to-gap line drive approach. Ball comes off the bat really well into the gaps and alleys. Strong two-handed finish.  
Power: 81 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Present pop to the gaps with more projected as his body continues to fill out. 
Arm: RH. INF - 74 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from an over the top slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well in the infield with quick feet and soft hands. Fields the ball out in front and funnels to the belt. Quick, clean exchanges with some lateral range. 
Run: 4.25 Home to first base time.


Ashton Siwald C / SS / Queen Anne's, MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 165 pounds. Strong, athletic body type. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, upright, slightly open stance at the plate. Smooth back load with really nice hand separation and a shorter stride. Hands stay inside the ball well and attacks the ball with intent. Slightly uphill swing path with quick hands and fast bat speed through the zone. Strong middle of the field line drive approach, with strength present into the gaps and alleys.  
Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Gap to gap pop is present with more projected as the body continues to fill out.  
Arm: RH. C - 68 mph. INF - 73 mph. OF - 73 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.16 - 2.38. Gains ground on throws to second with quick, clean footwork. Replaces feet well and squares shoulders to the target. Clean exchanges and throws showed accuracy to the bag. Attacks the ball with quick, active feet in the infield. Fields the ball out in front with clean actions and a quick release. Fields the ball on the glove hand side from the outfield with quick feet and solid momentum towards the target. 
Run: 4.25 Home to first base time.


Jackson Strzelczyk SS / RHP / South Carroll, MD / 2023

Body: 5’8”, 145 pounds. Athletic body type.
Hit: RHH. Hits from an upright, balanced, slightly closed stance at the plate. Smooth back load with solid hand separation and quick bat speed through the zone. Level bat path and stays through the ball well with a solid middle of the field line drive approach. Hands stay inside the ball well with some lower half involvement. Strong two-handed finish with solid extension past contact. 
Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Present gap-to-gap pop with more projected as his body fills out. 
Arm: RH. INF - 75 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Attacks the ball with quick, active feet in the infield. Fields the ball out in front with soft hands and a slight glove tap into clean exchanges. Throws were accurate and showed some carry.  
Run: 4.44 Home to first base time.
