Mid-Atlantic Scout Blog: Diamondskills Day 3

Jerry Shank

Day three of the Diamondskills All-American Camp was another impressive day with a large number of talented players down at Georgetown Prep in their beautiful indoor facility. Today we finish our scout blog with a final look from day three of the event, highlighting again some of the talent that stuck out on this final day of camp.

Again, it is important to note that arms are just starting to get into shape as they prepare for the spring season. As we all know, it is extremely early and this is a time for pitchers to really only start to get their arms into shape. Velocity is only starting to come around as more importantly, pitchers are working on their command / mechanics / and routine this early in the year. Velo's aren't necessarily the end-all-be-all at the moment as they again are working towards the upcoming spring season.

Note: With the completion of the All-American camp, profiles and video are going through the editing process and should be complete by the start of next week. To see the full roster at the All-American Camp, CLICK HERE

Trevor Bush C Colonial Forge (VA) 2021
Bush is another who is showing his ability to continue to develop at the plate. He hits from an athletic set up with a more deliberate load at the plate. He shows nice bat speed with a longer path at the plate. Bush shows an interesting skill set that shows potential as he continues to develop. His middle approach worked well and showed some uphill to his finish wanting to get the ball in the air. Interesting follow in the 21 class.

Brian Ferreira RHP Huntingtown (MD) 2021
Ferreira has an athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds. He has a build up style delivery with average leg kick working down to out. He has a shorter whippy arm action throwing from a high three quarter slot. He showed quick arm speed and was able to generate some arm side run on his fastball. He does pitch with some effort, but seemed to sync pretty well with his delivery. He has shown nice progressing since last time we saw him in the fall and looks lke he could be one to check out this spring.

Flynn Howard C St. John’s (DC) 2022
The more I got to watch Howard the more I liked this kid and his potential. At the plate it is pretty quiet and simple in his load, staying in an athletic position with a some weight shift. He hits slightly open and only has a little movement to square back up with a slight arm bar in the load. His swing is smooth and shows nice bat speed with a level path. He showed nice feel for his barrel during the BP sessions I got to see of him. Interesting 2022 to keep an eye on.

Nick Malone C South Carroll (MD) 2021
It has been nice to see the improvement of Malone since the last time we saw him last year at our Preseason All-State. Malone has showed that he has gotten stronger physically and you are starting to see that translate better offensively. He hits ffrom an athletic set up at the plat with a short quick load and leg lift to hitting position. He shows a short swing path keeping his hands inside the ball and whips the barrel through the zone. As his hands free up more, I could see some pop in that swing as well.

Justin Ritz C Westfield (VA) 2020
Ritz is an interesting offensive prospect at the plate. He has a taller frame with room at add strength, but shows fast bat speed and strength to the pull side at the plate. He hits from a tall set up with a leg kick load to square his body up to hitting position. From there he shows off his fast hands at the plate, whipping the barrel through the zone. He showed some rhythm and balance was average, but there is some definite potential in the swing.

Zachary Rogacki C Jackson memorial (NJ) 2021
Rogacki shows a sweet swing from the left side and an ability to get barrel on the ball. He has a projectable frame with some length at 5-10  and once he adds some strength to his 140-pounds, could be an interesting offensive catching prospect. He showed nice rhythm at the plate and quick hands, again consistently getting barrel on the ball during BP. He showed a tendency to get ot of balance at times, but his hands allowed for him to overcome that mistake and still make good contact. Like to see him in game, but Rogacki is one to check out this spring.

Brian Sanders IF Westfield (VA) 2020
Sanders has a projectable 6-foot-1 frame with room left for growth and brings some intrigue on the offensive side. He hits from a taller set up with a short rock back load. He has a level swing path at the plate with a barrel that stays in the zone and shows nice bat speed. There looks to be some power potential as well, with a smooth swing path and the hands worked well at the plate.

James Staedt RHP Frontier Central (NY) 2020
Staedt has a 6-foot, 175-pound frame and showed some nice early arm strength at the event. Throwing from a  lower three-quarter slot, Staedt showed some arm side run on his fastball that was 82-84 on the day, with a quality breaking ball to go with it. His breaking ball stayed hard and showed tight 11/5 shape with later life and potential on the pitch. Staedt’s command was a little inconsistent but you would think that is more so due to being more than likely one of his first pens of the year.
