Midwest Prospect League Scout Notes: 2018 Prospects

In the coming days, I will roll out content on the 2018, 2019 and 2020 prospects that competed in the Midwest Prospect League (MPL) at Grand Park in Westfield, IN. The MPL featured top-level travel programs’ 15U, 16U and 17U teams all at Grand Park’s state-of-the-art complex and some neighboring fields.. From a scouting and competition perspective, it was one of the best events I’ve been to in a while, certainly one that will require more than one guy next year. Nevertheless, this scouting notebook focuses solely on a handful of 2018 prospects that I saw over the course of two days during the four-day tournament ...

WESTFIELD, IN - On a whole, the 2018 class is shaping up to have arguably the most talented crop of high-level outfielders in recent memory. So talented, in fact, the top two-ranked prospects - and five of the top 20 - are outfielders, an unprecedented feat in the Prep Baseball Report overall rankings.

At the top of the list areJarred Kelenic(Waukesha West HS, WI) andMike Siani(William Penn Charter HS, PA), both left-handed hitting athletes with premium tools across the board.Elijah Cabell(TNXL Academy HS, FL),Alek Thomas(Mount Carmel HS, IL) andConnor Scott(Plant HS, FL) are also top 20 prospects.

This spring and early summer, OFNicholas Schnell(Roncalli HS, IN) has elevated his status into the mix of the aforementioned outfield prospects, and will undoubtedly catch more helium at the national level in the coming months. Not that Schnell was under the radar to begin with. A Louisville recruit, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound left-handed hitting Schnell is ranked among the top 50 prospects nationally, but he’s been more of a Midwest commodity.
