Montverde Strikes Out 19 in 1-0 Win

Montverde pitchers would strike out nineteen in a 1-0 win in eight innings at IMG Academy. Louisville recruit Kerry Wright got the start for Montverde and would come out dominate, striking out the side in the first. Working 90-93 touching 94 mph, the fastball showed late, heavy late with a lot of down plane action. Wright showed an improved, hard slider at 83-86 mph early, that garnered a lot of swing and misses.
Not to be outdone, LSU recruit Levi Kelly was impressive in his start for IMG Academy. Kelly would allow a soft hit single in the first to Nander De Sedas, and that would be the only hit he would allow over six innings of work. Kelly, who appears leaner and stronger, would mostly 90-93 touching 94 mph. The fastball generated eight swing and misses and shows present late, riding life. Kelly would show a much improved, plus sider on the night as well. The slider worked 82-84 mph and had downer, two-plane action and was a swing and miss pitch. Kelly also worked an overhand curveball at 76-78 mph with tight spin and depth at times. Kelly would finish with eigh strikeouts over six innings, while allowing no runs on one hit while walking a pair.
Wright would also go six innings, allowing no runs on two hits while walking a pair and striking out eleven. Wright would be relieved by Alabama State recruit Saul Gonzalez. Gonzalez came in just as dominate, striking out three in the seventh. Working 90-93 mph from a tough, low 3/4 slot, with a sweeping slider at 75-80 mph.
A single from De Sedas with one out in the eighth would get things going for the Eagles. A pair of walks and a strikeout would then have the bases loaded with two outs for Caleb Cali. Cali would work the count full before drawing the two-out, go-ahead walk, giving Montverde the 1-0 lead. Gonzalez would then work around a hit-batter and a base hit, striking out three to seal the 1-0 win for Montverde.
