Charlotte Christian Cruises at Country Day

Charlotte Christian used a deep lineup and consistent quality at-bats to score early and win conference match-up with Charlotte Country Day.  The scoring started in the 2nd with a leadoff double from Trey Donathan. A couple of walks would load the bases with 2 outs where Donathan would score on a wild pitch.  The 2nd run scored on a dropped third strike.


In the 3rd, Jonah Beamon would hit his first of two triples on the night, scoring Reid Mayers.  Beamon would score on a Jonathan Jagielski single to center, and later score on a double from Matthew Siverling, chasing Country Day starter Tyler Rigot.


On the mound JT Killen battled his command to work 4 innings in the win.  He punched 7 while walking 5 and did not give up a hit. Brett Adams would work the final three innings for the save.


In the 5th, Cameron Greene broke up the no-hit bid, singling to left.  He would later score on a single off the bat of John Hosmer.

Helms Too Tough for Cuthbertson

Senior RHP Matt Helms picked up a save and a win in one day as he rolled through the Cavalier lineup, leading Marvin Ridge to a 5-3 victory in a suspended game, and then a 4-0 win in game 2 of the three game series.


Picking up from Monday, in the bottom of the 8th inning with runners on 2nd and 3rd, with a 2 run lead, Helms went to work inducing a ground ball to end game one, giving Marvin Ridge the victory.  Game 2 started 10 minutes later with Helms back on the bump. He worked 6 innings, allowing 2 hits as Marvin Ridge pieced together 4 runs to take the game and series.


Reid Viar worked to match Helms, only allowing 1 earned run over 6 innings.  Game three of the conference set is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

Villaman Fires No-No; Whitaker Homers

The best teams in the state typically have very good players who play at a high level and at times can carry their team.  At this point Ledford HS has played really well, earning a No. 2 ranking in the PBR/NCBCA 2A Coaches Poll. Logan Whitaker and Chris Villaman have are two high profile players that have lived up to the billing early in 2018.


Villaman, an NC State commit took the mound on Thursday night, working 7 innings without allowing a hit.  He struckout 15, while throwing close to 70% strikes over 93 pitches.


Whitaker, also an NC State commit, made noise with his bat on this night, belting a double and homer, securing 4 RBIs.  Each has been dominate on the mound and they have made big contributions, early in the ‘18 season, with the bat.

Myers Park Edges East Meck in 10

Scoreless through 9 full innings, Myers Park finally broke through in the 10th.  Will Cordes led off the inning with a single, advancing to 3B on a double from Jack Ahlum.  Donnie Dockery followed with bunt single to score Cordes. East Mecklenburg was able to close the inning a couple of big strikeouts to leave the game at 1-0.


The story of the game may have been Myers Park starting pitcher William Flynn.  Flynn worked 9 innings, earning the win, striking out 12 and only issuing 1 walk.  Matt Hunter entered in the 10th get the save.


Luke Little pitched well in a start for East Meck, working 6 innings.  Little recorded 12 strikeouts, giving up 1 hit.

Randleman Walks Off in 8

Randleman, ranked No.1 in the PBR/NCBCA Coaches Poll, has a flare for the dramatic.  On Thursday night they used a 2 run seventh to extend the game at home vs. Southwestern Randolph. In the 8th, Lucas Baker’s SAC Fly to center scored Dawson Edwards for the win.


Southwestern scored a run in the top of the 7th to push their lead to 3-1.  In the bottom half, with the bases loaded and one out, Matt Kemp singled to center, scoring Owen Strickland and Mason Matthews.  With two runners on, Southwestern did induce to pop ups to push the game to extras.


Trey Cooper and Dominick Poole combined to work 8 innings, striking out 14, while only walking 4 for Randleman.  Poole gained the win. Randleman did work through 6 errors on the night, Bryce Marsh started for Southwestern Randolph working 6 strong innings, only giving up the 1 earned run.
