LAS VEGAS, NV – A full slate of games on hand with teams from five states set to tip off the season today. In one of the early games this morning New Mexico Junior College (NMJC) took on Cochise (AZ).  NMJC’s Tristan Stivers, a Texas State commit, struggled with his command. Pitching from an all stretch delivery, his fastball ranged 88-92 with occasional down plane.  With spray command, it was hard to tell whether he was trying to throw two off speed pitches or just inconsistent with a “slurvy” breaking ball, 72-77.  Defensive miscues and limited offense did not aid Stivers cause as he was lifted early in the contest.  Cochise starter, Jake Rogers (Centennial HS, LV) provided limited scoring opportunities, holding the Thunderbirds scoreless through 5, mixing his mid 80s FB with a curveball and changeup. Cochise would preserve the shutout, winning the game in 7 innings by a score of 8-0.  Cochise first baseman, Ryan Magdic, collected 4 hits, while catcher, Hernan Yanez, had 3, each with a double and multiple RBI.

 

Arizona Western - 4
San Jacinto (TX) - 3

 

Plenty of heat in attendance to watch San Jacinto (San Jac) from Houston, TX take on Arizona Western College (AWC).  The Gators jumped ahead of AWC early on INF Camryn Williams (SO) first inning solo homerun. Williams unloaded on a fastball, driving it well over the right field fence.  Williams would pace the Gators doubling later in the contest.  San Jac starter, Mitchell Parker (LHP) yielded one run in 4+ innings of work.  Parker pitched with a fastball that topped out early at 89.  He struggled to land his breaking ball, up to 75 and was most consistent with his changeup, coming in at 78-79. Parker throws from a high ¾ slot with a heavy wrap. He repeated his delivery, pitching consistently up in the zone with occasional down plane.  Parker was relieved by Dylan Lester, RHP 6’1’ 195.  Lester has solid area command of his FB 87-88.  He relied heavily on his SL 77-79, using it to backdoor and backfoot opposing hitters. Lester held AWC scoreless. However, Arizona Western would not be denied, pushing across three in the final frame to win on a single up the middle by shortstop, Carlos Arrelano, and upset the top ranked Gators.

Next up the Central Arizona Vaqueros would take on the NMJC Thunderbirds.  NMJC starter, Brayan Garcia, 6’4” 185, struggled out of the gate, but his FB up to 96 allowed him to work out of the 1st inning jam.  Garcia pitched from a ¾ slot with a cross in his delivery that provided added deception. His FB ranged 89-96, SL 80-84. He looks the part and has a loose arm. He had command issues early but revealed better zone feel as the game progressed until tiring and being lifted for Pablo Suarez. Suarez, a 5’10” 170 left-hander pitched with a fastball ranging 87-91 and curveball 73-76. Suarez was consummate competitor and flashed a solid breaking ball.  The Vacqueros starter, RHP Jason Nelson, SO, 6’ 180, pitched with a fastball ranging 87-92, SL 78-79. Nelson displayed limited life on his fastball which planed out at the bottom of the zone. He flashed a slider with the makings of an out pitch. DJ Carpenter, FR, came on in relief of Nelson.  The 6’7” right hander delivered with high a ¾ arm angle with consistent down plane. His fastball ranged from 87-90. Tyler Woessner, RHP, would finish the game, but with most of the damage done, the Thunderbirds would tack on a few runs late and defeat the Vacqueros 9-1.

College of Southern Nevada - 1

 

The fourth and final game of the day did not disappoint.  The long-awaited matchup between the host CSN Coyotes and San Jacinto Gators was well played and tight throughout.  San Jac starter, RHP Dane Acker 6’3” 205, pitched comfortably 90-91, topping out at 92. He displayed a solid slider at 80-82 and feel for a changeup at 81-82.  His easy delivery from a high ¾ arm slot allowed for solid area command, carrying him into the sixth before being relieved by Luis Quinones.  Quinones, a 6’ 205 sophmore from Puerto Rico was equally up to the challenge throwing 3 2/3 inning, featuring a FB 86-91. Quinones would strike out seven, relying heavily on a filthy split finger with late down action, 78-80.  Closing it out for the Gators was LHP, Luke Little. Little, 6’8” 220 threw to one hitter using primarily a 95-96 fastball until he finished with a hard, biting slider at 83.  CSN Starter, Matt Gilbertson (Green Valley) competed admirably, surrendering two runs in 6+ innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Gilbertson’s pitched 83-87 mostly with solid fastball command, throwing a hard downer type curveball at 75-77.  He was relieved by Trevor Jackson, RHP 6’2” 185, throwing 2.1 scoreless.  Jackson’s fastball sat 87-88 and his curveball 74-75. Offensively, the day belonged to San Jac infielder, Camryn Williams who tripled early in the affair. Williams showed a quick, whippy bat and the ability to use the whole field throughout the day. CSN right fielder, Steven Rivas, 6’1” 195 stayed on an outside fastball, doubling to the oppo gap for the Coyotes.  The Gators posted 5 hits, two off the bat of southern Utah native, OF Braden Winget, 6’3 200, while CSN managed just two hits, losing the contest 2-1.
