Northwest Guilford Impresses at NHSI

One of the premier events on the high school calendar each year is the USA Baseball National High School Invitational (NHSI).  Hosted at the National Training Center in Cary, NC, 16 teams from across the country converge to compete for the NHSI Championship.

Hosted in North Carolina, the state gets one team into the event each year as the host team.  This year the Northwest Guilford Vikings were selected, based in part on their deep roster of Division 1 commitments, including several pitchers.

The Vikings would go 2-1 in their three games at the event, representing the state of North Carolina very well.  They bounced back from a tough defeat and showed some resolve in game 2 after finding themselves down again.  In game 3, the Vikings proved they could win in another fashion, taking a close game late, with several clutch 7th inning at bats.

PBR was on hand for the NHSI, covering several high end draft prospects and the event’s run to t a championship.  While Northwest was out of the running for the trophy after day 1, they still made an impression on the event.

Eleven players were named to the NHSI All-Tournament team, from the 16 team field.  The Vikings game 3 stater, Gavin Mortenson (SS/RHP, 2020, Western Carolina commit) was one of the 11.  Mortenson hit .500 in 10 at-bats with a double, two runs scored and one RBI.  On the mound, Mortenson threw a complete game in 90 pitches, working 7 innings and only allowing 1 earned run while striking out five.
