Prep Baseball Report Oklahoma hosted its second JUCO Sophomore Scout Day on Friday, January 25th, at Murray State College, home of the Aggies. The event showcased 19 of Murray State Sophomores, 11 on the mound and 9 position players including one two way. Each position player went through a pro-style workout and pitchers threw pens.

Jonathan Brandon 3B / Airline, LA / 2017

A proportional 5-foot-11, 185-pound frame with some strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a slightly open, athletic, and balanced set-up with rhythm throughout. Uses a short and smooth load and short leg lift with a moderate stride before launching his hands on a flat and efficient path to contact with excellent extension. In BP, shows an all fields and flat approach with occasional lift, almost all barrels with some barrel strength and bat speed, 95 mph exit velo. Defensively, shows clean and active footwork with average hands. Uses a moderate arm stroke coming through a high-¾ slot with excellent accuracy at 79 mph across the diamond. 

Mason Brinkley 2B / Tushka, OK / 2017

A proportional 5-foot-9, 170-pound frame. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from an open and back leg heavy set-up with a slight crouch and rhythm in his hands. Uses a moderate hand load and long stride with a late heel plant before launching his hands on a flat and efficient path to contact with a high finish. In BP, shows an opposite field and flat, pull on the ground approach, some barrels, 86 mph exit velo. Defensively, shows above average hands with mostly clean footwork. Throws with a short arm stroke through a high-¾ slot with some accuracy across the diamond at 85 mph.

Wesley Case RHP / Granbury, TX / 2017

A long and lean 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame with room to add more size and strength. On the mound, the right-hander works only from the stretch with a high leg kick and quality leg drive down the mound, striding open, and finishing to the first base side. Uses a full arm stroke with a quick change of direction at the bottom before coming through a true side-arm slot. Fastball sits 79-80 mph with some arm side run especially when arm side and down, almost all strikes. Slider has 10/4 shape with some late depth at 70-71 mph, some strikes. Changeup has consistent run, controlled around the zone at 70-71 mph. 

Raygan Dodd RHP / Madill, OK / 2017

A durable 6-foot-4, 215-pound frame with some strength. On the mound, the right-hander works from an abbreviated wind up with rhythm and a high leg kick before striding far down the mound with quality leg drive and finishing to the first base side. Arm action is full and fluid in the back before coming through a high-¾ slot. Fastball shows some downhill tilt and occasional arm side run at 84-86 mph, almost all strikes. Changeup shows consistent and late sink at 76-79 mph, mostly strikes. Curveball has consistent depth with 12/6 shape, commanded at a strike and chase pitch 73-74 mph. 

Austin Garrett C / Tuttle, OK / 2017

A durable 6-foot, 200-pound frame with strength throughout. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide and balanced set-up with rhythm in his hands. Uses a smooth load and no stride with a heel lift and replant before launching his hands on a flat path with some length to contact and a high finish. In BP, shows a middle of the field and flat approach with occasional lift, bat speed, and barrel strength, almost all barrels, 96 mph exit velo. Defensively, Garrett is well advanced, catching from a wide and flexible base with some sway and blocking with agility, keeping the ball short and in front of him. Receives with quiet and strong hands beating the ball to the spot with little extra movement. Throws down with consistently clean footwork and very quick and clean exchanges before throwing with a short arm stroke through a high-¾ slot with some accuracy at 82 mph for showcase pop times of 1.81-1.93.

Ty Gibbs RHP / Holdenville, OK / 2017

A lean 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame with room to add size. On the mound, the right-hander works from a controlled tempo delivery with a moderate leg kick before driving down the mound and finishing slightly to the first base side. Arn action is quick in the back, getting high early before coming through an over the top slot. Fastball sits 80-81 mph with some late arm-side run, mostly strikes. Slider shows gradual break with 11/5 shape at 70-71 mph, some strikes. Changeup has some fade at 77-78 mph for strikes. 

 

 

Jake Gray C / 1B / Lakeside, LA / 2017

A durable and strong 6-foot-2, 220-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide, balanced, and athletic stance with some rhythm in his low set hands. Uses a moderate knee-knock leg kick before launching his hands on a flat and efficient path with excellent extension. In BP, shows an all fields and mostly flat approach with occasional lift and big pop to the gaps with bat speed, barrel strength, and barrel control, 96 mph exit velo.  Defensively, receives from a narrow but flexible base with quiet and strong hands. Sits higher in the squat on throws down, coming out of the shoot with short and clean footwork and mostly clean exchanges with a short arm stroke coming through and over the top slot with some carry and accuracy to second base at 74 mph for showcase pop times of 1.94-2.04. 

Michael Hackler RHP / Kiowa, OK / 2017

A long and durable 6-foot-5, 220-pound frame with some strength. On the mound, the right-hander works only from the stretch with a high and coiling leg kick before striding open down the mound and finishing to the first base side. Arm action is long and quick in the back getting behind him before coming through a high-¾ slot with some arm speed. Fastball shows some dowhill tilt at 86-87 mph, some strikes. Slider has 11/5 shape with some late depth at 72-73 mph, mostly strikes.

Reagan Hall RHP / Westmoore, OK / 2017

A proportional 5-foot-10, 185-pound frame. On the mound, the right-hander works only from the stretch with a moderate leg kick before striding down the mound and finishing balanced. Arm action has moderate length in the back before coming through a high-¾ slot with some stiffness. Fastball flashes some run at 67-68 mph, some strikes. Curveball has some depth with 12/6 shape at 58-59 mph, some strikes. Changeup has some fade at 61-62 mph.

Marcus Hampton LHP / Tushka, OK / 2017

A durable 6-foot-1, 220-pound frame. On the mound, the left-hander works from an abbreviated windup with uptempo rhythm and a moderate leg kick before driving down the mound and finishing to the first base side. Arm action is full and quick in the back before coming through an over the top slot. Fastball keeps its plane at 76-80 mph. Breaking ball has slurvy shape with 11/5 shape and gradual break at 68-71 mph, some strikes. Changeup shows consistent and heavy run and mostly strikes at 77-78 mph.  

Matt Knox OF / Durant , OK / 2017

A lean 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame with some room to add size and strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a back leg heavy set-up with a slight crouch and some rhythm in his hands. Uses a smooth load and short stride with a late heel plant before launching his hand on a flat path through extension. In BP, shows a middle of the field and flat approach with almost every swing resulting in a line drive into short center field, 93 mph exit velo. Defensively, shows clean, confident, and athletic actions charging the ball on the ground with above average hands. Gets behind fly balls and comes through them well. Throws with a small crow hop and a long arm stroke coming through a high-¾ slot with accuracy at 84 mph from the outfield. 

Christopher Lopez Gutierrez OF / 1B / Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy , PR / 2016

A 6-foot-2, 202-pound athletic frame with some strength throughout. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a slightly knock-kneed and back leg heavy set-up with rhythm in his hands. Uses a short leg kick and arm-bar load before launching his hands on a slightly uphill path with some length and elite bat speed and some barrel strength. In BP, shows a middle to pull approach with some lift and consistent pop, leaving the yard twice, mostly barrels, 100 mph exit velo. Defensively, shows clean, athletic, and smooth actions in the outfield with rhythm, coming through the ball well. Throws with a full, long, and loose arm stroke coming through a high-¾ slot with elite arm speed and some accuracy at 96 mph from the outfield. 

Wyatt Marr OF / LHP / Wakeland, TX / 2017

A 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame with some room to add size and strength. On the mound the left-hander works only from the stretch with a moderate tempo delivery and high leg kick before driving down the mound and open with quality leg drive finishing hard to the third base side. Arm action is long and quick in the back before coming through an over the top slot. Fastball shows consistent and late arm-side run at 80-84 mph, mostly strikes. Curveball shows 1/7 shape with some late depth at 75-76. Changeup shows consistent and heavy fade at 74-75 mph, mostly strikes. 

Jacob Mattox RHP / Plano Sr. , TX / 2017

A long and projectable 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame with plenty of room to add size and strength. On the mound, the right-hander works from an average tempo delivery before striding down the mound and finishing to the first base side. Arm action is long in the back coming through quickly after hitting the bottom of the arm stroke through an over the top slot with some arm speed. Fastball sits 84-85 mph with downhill tilt, mostly strikes. Curveball shows big and consistent depth with 12/6 shape at 67-68, some strikes. Slider has 11/5 shape with some late depth at 70-71 mph, some strikes. Changeup shows consistent arm side run at 70-71 mph, mostly strikes. 

Matt McElwain OF / Southwest Christian School, TX / 2017

A long, lean, and athletic, 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame with room to add size and strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an even and slightly knock-kneed and quiet set-up. Uses a smooth load and slight leg lift before dropping his hands and pulling them through a slightly uphill path with some length through extension. In BP, shows a true all fields approach, hitting balls hard from line to line with some lift and pop, left the yard once to both gaps, mostly barrels, 90 mph exit velo. Defensively, shows clean, controlled, and deliberate actions when charging the ball. Throws with a long, fluid, and loose arm action coming through a high-¾ slot with excellent accuracy at 89 mph. 

Gehrig Octavio OF / 2B / Waiakea, HI / 2017

A lean 5-foot-7, 165-pound frame with quick twitch actions. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from an even back leg heavy crouch with rhythm in his hands. Uses almost no load with a quick and moderate stride before launching his hands on a flat path through extension. In BP, shows a flat and all fields approach that plays into his speed game, mostly barrels, 90 mph exit velo. Defensively, shows well advanced clean, confident, aggressive, and athletic actions in the outfield charging the ball on the ground very well and getting behind balls in the air. Throws with a big and quick crow hop and moderate arm stroke coming through a ¾ slot with some accuracy at 86 mph from the outfield. 

Cole Shinsky LHP / 1B / Knoch, PA / 2016

A physically impressive 6-foot-5, 235-pound frame with strength. On the mound, the left-hander works only from the stretch with an average tempo and moderate leg kick with a long stride down the mound. Arm action is long, loose, and fluid in the back before coming through a high-¾ slot with some arm speed. Fastball has some downhill tilt and flashes arm-side run at 85-87 mph, mostly strikes. Changup shows fade in the bottom of the zone at 74-80 mph. Curveball has 1/7 shape and is thrown for a strike and chase pitch at 75-76 mph. 

Billy Wall RHP / Byng, OK / 2017

A durable 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame. On the mound, the right-hander works from an up-tempo delivery with rhythm and a high leg kick before striding down the mound and finishing to the first base side. Arm action is long, fluid, and controlled in the back before coming through an over the top slot. Fastball has some downhill tilt at 85-87 mph, almost all strikes. Curveball has big depth with 12/6 shape at 65-66 mph, thrown for strikes. Changeup has consistent heavy fade in the bottom of the strike zone, thrown with full arm speed at 76-77 mph. Also mixes in a 2-seam with sink at 84-85 mph. 

Riley Wood LHP / Dripping Springs, TX / 2016

A long and projectable 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame with some room to add size and strength. On the mound, the left-hander works only from the stretch with an average tempo delivery and high leg kick before striding down the mound and finishing to the first base side. Fastball sits 79-80 mph with some cut, some strikes. Curveball has 12/6 shape with some late depth and thrown for consistent strikes at 70-71 mph. Changeup is thrown with sub fastball arm speed at 71 mph with some fade around the zone.
