PBR Player Of The Year Announced

PBR Staff

Earlier this week, Prep Baseball Report announced the PBR State Player of the Year awards, and yesterday announced the inaugural First Team All-PBR for the states PBR currently covers. From the 2018 list of 37 individual PBR State POY awards, we have selected one athlete who has excelled amongst his peers, on his way to earning the second ever Prep Baseball Report Player of the Year Award:

Mason Englert

Englert, a senior right-handed pitcher and first baseman from Forney High School, produced a strong statistical season while helping lead his team to the 5A state championship series.

In leading Forney to a state runner-up finish, Englert went 14-2 with a 0.78 ERA. In 98.1 innings, he allowed just 45 hits and 11 walks while striking out 177. He threw 10 shutouts and two no-hitters. He also contributed at the plate, hitting .341 with 10 doubles, a home run and 28 RBIs. Most notably, he broke a state record for consecutive scoreless innings with 55.1. The record was previously held by David Clyde, who was a first-round pick of the Texas Rangers in 1973 and famously went straight to the big leagues. Englert, originally a Texas A&M recruit, was drafted by the Rangers in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft and recently signed his professional contract with a $1 million signing bonus.

“Having seen Englert this spring, twice in the playoffs, his performances were dominant,” said Toby Bicknell, scouting director for PBR Texas. “The scoreless innings streak speaks for itself and he was instrumental in Forney’s run to the state championship final. He has earned this award with an unparalleled body of work.”

The inaugural 2017 Prep Baseball Report Player of the Year award went to MacKenzie Gore, a left-handed pitcher and outfielder from North Carolina who filled up the stat book, while also leading his high school program to an NCHSAA 1A state championship title. Gore was selected third overall in the Major League Baseball Draft and is currently in A-ball with the San Diego Padres organization.

The Prep Baseball Report staff has been diligently scouting and covering games at diamonds across the country this spring to bring parents, athletes and fans the most comprehensive coverage of amateur baseball. Their dedication and coverage allows PBR a credible way to identify the top athletes each year who best represent the game of baseball.
